I've heard of this as "the year 3 million children disappeared from America"... Basically at some point roughly 50 years ago, the IRS changed their tax form so people needed to specify who their dependent children were with SS numbers in order to claim them. At least 3 million dependents suddenly disappeared in a poof of paperwork.

I think he is just talking about his withholding not his return

I'm positive he was talking about his W4

He may have been talking about his W-4 where you can claim as many dependents as you wish, it only affects your witholding. This would also explain the beginning of the clip when the host asks how he owes so much taxes.

I think he meant 9 exemption
I used to do 3 then pay like 30$ every year, no reason to give them an int% free loan every year

you missed it. He was talking about his witholding worksheet and bumping his paycheck up by reducing the witholding. And then wam. you underpaid and you write a bigcheck at tax time.

My dad told me when I first started doing my own taxes that I always needed to list myself as a dependent of myself. Looking back it was a small thing, but it did feel dumb and eventually I stopped because I learned how to do my own taxes properly.
Also wouldn’t be surprised if he wrote me off for himself even during years I filed my own taxes. Which is half back because he did help me so much in living and surviving since my jobs never covered everything.

He was talking about how he set up his withholding, and he explained in the clip that when it was time to file he ended up with a large tax bill because he didnt withhold nearly enough.

Just wanted to say I do really appreciate your content and it’s great to find someone online. It feels like you could actually trust what they’re saying saying it’s true. But I think as others have noted he’s talking about what he claims on his W-4 withholding and the reason he owe so many taxes because by the time return comes around, it doesn’t have those dependents to actually claim the make up that difference. sorry for any typos speech to text

I think you're missing that he's putting that on that his employer with holding document so that there isn't any withholding only SS.
Then he's filing and carrying th balance.

My brother and I have SSN just a single digit apart despite an eight and a half years difference in our ages. It was because of the rule change that the IRS required all dependents to have a unique SSN to be claimed in a tax filing. Up until then, it was essentially the honor system. They were able to get our numbers in time for the submittal that year.

I think the man claiming 9 is doing so oh his Withholding Form W-4, not the Federal Income Tax Form 1040 shown in the video.
When I was an employee, (in the 1980’s) I always claimed 9 dependents to reduce the amount taken out of each paycheck. The following April I owed a bunch in taxes, but I was able to put that money to work, rather than granting the government an interest-free loan.
People that celebrate, “getting a lot back on my taxes” are doing exactly that. They are loaning the government THEIR money and receiving no interest on it.

As someone who messed something up on their taxes once years ago, you don't want to deal with the crap of dealing with it. It's all by mail and takes months (during which either you send them what they ask for or accrue interest) and you probably won't get back all of what you think you should.

Yep I was 19 years old and talked into claiming a friends two kids. 5 years later I was audited and had to pay $8000 back to the IRS.

Little fact. The IRS and SS office don’t communicate. I adopted my nephew & changed his name. SSN stayed the same his name didn’t. IRS cancelled my Child Credit until I went to SS with the new birth certificate. It’s been 4 months and IRS still hasn’t updated the return.

I love your content. It’s so informative and concise. I hope when I’m done with the bar I will be able to make videos a third of the quantity of yours

Used to work for H&R Block franchisee back in late 90’s setting up those satellite offices that would pop up everywhere. Got to know some of the preparers over the years. It was crazy how many of them would do taxes for divorced couples and both would try to claim their kids as dependents. Then get mad at preparer when they were told that actually only one could claim the children and the other couldn’t. Sorry, but children xyz have already been claimed by the other party, your taxes weren’t accepted by the government and they will need to be corrected. They would have to sue their divorced partner for the tax penalties accrued and the rebate to get it all fixed.

I know a small number of let's say, fence maneuvers, that have 40 to 50 dependents on their returns.
Granted this is from a company I worked out over 10 years ago but I remember being explained to me.
I was in complete shock, I have always done zero

Sounds like he was talking about withholding.
