►Scales and Arpeggios Play-Along Collections Bundle:

This simple scale exercise will help you master the fingerboard and get comfortable moving in and out of thumb position. It's a simple major scale played using two notes per position, but as you move up the fingerboard...it gets a lot harder! So, take your time, focus on the transition in and out of thumb position, maintaining a good hand shape, and careful shifting to see the best results.

Want more scales? We've just updated our collections that now feature new and improved backing tracks, cycle of 5ths practice tracks, video lessons for beginners, and 3-octave advanced scales.

I really appreciate this great lesson Geoff, I really I got learn the fretboard and now were the notes. I am going watch this as I play, and mimic what you are doing, I like watch bass players hand and seeing how they play something on their left hand. That's how I learn things!! I am going to get a teacher soon as possible!! Geoff keep up the amazing work 👍, from your American Cousin 🇺🇸 a cross the pound.

one thing ive always wondered. When people play scales etc do they think of the notes they are playing or just the framework of the scale and where the fingers can go? I never thought of the notes at all before but recently I started to try!

Changing positions every two notes really makes you to think when crossing over to thumb position.

Know this good exs. I alway play the last step (vii to viii) with a different fingering right not to shift the finger to the next key going down but playing viii - i in a step acheeving a good position to go back again. ( is this clear?) ;-)
