God - but you described that taste so accurately! I've had to do this several times. As a grown up I didn't know that adults didn't normally need to chew all food till it's complete mush. My throat had been closing up over some years. But I found out during a trip to the ER there is a special doctor who was able to send a tube down my throat with a "balloon" to stretch out my throat. Really helped me.
Whatever is going on with you, hope it's an easy fix.

While growing up I volunteered at a local Veterinary hospital. One of the Vets told me the best way to kick a bad hangover is a couple shorts of barium. He came in one day not doing too good, did 2 shots and within 30 mins he was totally back to good again.
Out Fucking Standing!!! I honestly thought he was messing around. 😜

Fun story. A few years ago, I had a similar procedure done, except they were looking inside my lungs. I had to be fully sedated, but only AFTER drinking the same or a very similar numbing solution. While waking up from the anesthesia, they were pulling the breathing tube and camera out, and I started to gag a little. The nurse asked me if I was okay, to which I responded, "I'm fine. I'm gay so I've had FAR bigger things down my throat than that." And since they record the things you say coming out of anesthesia, to make sure you're coherent and what not, I'm pretty confident that's on my permanent medical record... lol.

So I did this awhile back, and I'm only 34, and I've had the issue now for a few years. It is not fun. Acid reflux can turn into Gerd, Gerd can turn into a schatzki ring, and it leads to other issues (like difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia). Besides taking meds, doing procedures etc. Which I have done a preventative measure you can take if you ever notice that you have acid reflux regularly is talk to a GI Specialist and a Nutritionist. What you put in your body makes a big difference!

I had to do that test TWICE because I failed it the first time! 🤯 It was awful. The tablet they give you at the end got stuck twice on it's way down; once in my throat and then again in my upper chest.

Afterward the speech therapist they had there to watch and give her opinion of why I couldn't swallow literally pointed to her head and said, "I don't know any, but you should find a therapist who specializes in food issues. Because I think it's up here." I left in tears because I was too weak (from lack of nutrition!) to fight her. If I could go back... Girl would get an earful! Security might've been called. You freaking just watched that thing get stuck in my esophagus TWICE and you're telling me it's all in my head?!? 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

For anyone with possible intestinal blockages a barium test is the one to do. Yes its like drinking chalk but the scan will show where the blockage is, as the "chalky" thick liquid gets stuck and it shows up on scans. It saved my 4 yr old's life when after 3 weeks she still couldnt digest food and nothing was coming out the other end. The barium liquid showed where her stomch and intestines were not only blocked but that the blockage was up under the ribs. Impacted constipation was it. Even whilst evacuating your bowels you can become constipated over time where your stomach gets squished and nothing can go or stay down - it's revolting stuff but I am so grateful we've got it. Sorry for the overshare but this stuff is brilliant 💜

Yeah. I spent a like week in radiology one day and I had to drink that gunge and try to keep in down when what they were trying to figure out was what was causing something I had called Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. You can guess how much fun that was. Hope they get you sorted out. Gastric issues really suck.

Have u heard of a 75-year-old Ron Sveden, from Brewster Massachusetts, who was already fighting emphysema when his health deteriorated further. Doctors had told him that they had discovered a growth sprouting in his lung which at first seemed to be Lung Cancer. After weeks of tests, he came across the greatest surprise of his life. It was revealed that he did not have Cancer but it was a pea plant that had sprouted after being swallowed the wrong way. He then had surgery to get the plant removed.

I love that you shared this. for anyone with questions about how this works, the most important part of the Barium swallow is that it is radioactive and literally illuminates the area on the x-ray or scan.
