Ableton Live 12 - This MIDI Device Got a BIG Update

Ableton Live 12’s generative tools can generate pretty decent chords with inversions while staying in key, so it’s a pretty neat feature for people who aren’t so good with music theory.

However, there’s another massive update to Live’s MIDI effect devices that lets you actually play the chords just by pressing single notes on your keyboard. Playing the chords allows for more rhythmical expression than just using the mouse to enter them. I’m talking about the Chord MIDI effect. And yes, we’ve had that effect since forever and it may not look drastically different than what we had in Live 11 but it’s much, much better.

Great video as always! I think the reason your last example “got worse” is that min11 chords are a common and popular sound, whereas Maj11 chords are very rare and sound quite dissonant (if the 11th is included on a major chord, it’s usually raised to avoid this). The old behavior forces all chords to the lovely min11, whereas I think you’re getting some Maj11 chords in the new behavior (as you said, some scale degrees are major chords, even in Fm!).

I didn’t actually slow this down and analyze the pitches it’s generating, but that’s what I suspect is happening.

Weird. I'm doing the exact same thing, but my midi monitor is showing only 2 notes.
