Instead of hating and telling people why NOT to get them, tell people why they should. This hurt my heart, having one of my own. 1. They shed, but it’s super easy to clean up and you can bond with them!

2. They are huge cuddle monsters, one second your laying down alone, the next, you have a big floof on you.

3. They are protective and guard dogs. They usually sit at the window and wait for you to come home, and are very observant, as they bark at anyone who steps foot on the porch.

4. They are great with kids! They cuddle them and are super gentle. And don’t let anyone new touch them.

5. They make the cutest noises! They groan, whine and have a deafening bark to scare anything.

6. They never part from you and may become sad if you aren’t around a lot. They choose one person in the family as the leader and obey their commands the most.

7. They love walks, super outgoing and always protect you.

8. They sleep most of the time, but they also follow you everywhere!

9. They are huge! If you’re looking for a big cuddly protective dog, this one’s for you.

Edit: didn’t mean to star a war-
I’m just saying that if you are telling people not to get a Berner, also say some reasons why to get one!

they might have a short life span and shed a lot, but they are 100% worth it. And them being so big is one of the best parts about them, and they are not needy, they just love hanging out with you, they are very social.

Even if they do have a short life, it’s better for them to live having a good life than a bad one

I wouldn’t call these factors to NOT get one, but factors to keep in mind

My response to each reason:
1. Shedding? Fine by me.
2. Needy? Perfect, I'm a needy human that needs this needy canine
3. Neither do I... I hate the sun and humidity....
4. Huge? That's an added bonus! Hugs for days!
5. Great! I'm not for a long time, I'm here for a good time!

For all the negatives here is why you get one" They are cuddly and love hugs, interaction and just being with you. Trustworthy and unconditional love. Funny as heck and they love to talk to you. They are the best dog ever, just don't over feed them. Keep em well excersised and keep their minds busy. These are working dogs and they love to do things

I had a Bernese mountain dog and would ALWAYS go for one again! They are big loving teddy bears, sometimes stubborn, but that's about it. Mine was all happy go lucky, getting along with every dog around, deeply relaxed. They are winter dogs, so you get these long walks in the snow. Maybe you should reconsider if you live in Arizona, they really don't like to move a lot when it's hot.

The shorter lifespan was actually a plus for me, the commitment wasn't as long. They eat a lot, that's something to consider like with any big dog. About shedding - Yes, they have this beautiful fur that sheds a lot twice a year. Did you know that you can collect the hair and send it to companies that make wool out of it, so you can knit your own sweater? It's supposed to be high quality wool. :-)

As long as a dog doesn’t have behavior issues, I can handle pretty much any other reason. My Bernese is 3 months and I’ve not quite bonded with her yet, but I’m determined to mold her into a well behaved dog

Regarding shorter lifespan: there's four drivers: size, genetics, sterilization method, lifestyle /socioeconomic factors.

- Larger dogs mature into adulthood slower, but then age more quickly then smaller dogs.
- breeding practices has resulted in some breeds having higher rates of some deadly diseases
- sterililzation method: there's two main ways to sterilize. Those that remove hormones (gonadectomy/castration/full spay/neuter) ans those that spare hormones (hormone sparing sterililzation, ovary sparring spay, tubal ligation, vastecomy) and is Similar in health to being intact (oss may reduce some issues). Removing hormones can reduce some diseases, but increase but others.. Which is better is... Debatable. There's a limited studies that account for ...
- socioeconomic factors: working dogs tend to have higher risks due to being outside more/etc, dogs in lower income households tend to more often be working dogs, have less vet care (and thus tend to more often intact, which makes studies around sterililzation methods have confounding bias issues)

So, as large working dog, a shorter lifespan is expected alas.
