I literally took a break from learning an SRV solo because the frustration was getting to me. I was doing all the things you mentioned, even holding my breath in preparation for the more challenging parts. Yea, you need to be chill when playing & practicing. So wise! A lot of psychologists would nodd. Stay in the flow, breathe, let it happen. I remember Hans Zimmer saying that when he is composing music it feels like "it's not me, there is just a piece of music appearing"... Wow!

Good advice Ross. Your going into meditation here and it works. To take it a step further, breathe properly by circular breathing from the diaphragm.Plenty of vids out there on this.

BTW, we were in Scotland last month. We did a clockwise loop, in a rental from Edinburgh to the west coast, up to the Highlands, east to Inverness, and down to St. Andrews. Stunningly beautiful and wonderful people who made us feel most welcome.

Hi Ross. I find the biggest hinderance to learning something technically challenging is to getting down on myself. Negative self-talk is self-defeating. If I just relax, focus, and give myself the space to make mistakes, I find that eventually it come to me. Breathing is part of it for sure. In addition to practicing guitar, I also recommend a practicing Mindfulness. This has helped me immeasurably in guitar and in life ❤

Brilliant advice Ross. I'm trying to breath more when playing. One of the hardest things to get over is playing in front of people not even a crowd just a handful of people can be really difficult

My only guitar teacher I ever had, a remarkable player and close friend of Mr EVH, told me not only to focus on breathing yourself but to make the instrument sound like it is breathing as well. Never forgotten that.
