Over three years ago, Versova beach in Mumbai was little more than a dumping ground for garbage and waste. After witnessing the devastating impact the refuse was having on the ocean, Afroz Shah decided to take matters into his own hands. What started off as a single man’s mission to clean up his favorite childhood beach turned into the world’s largest beach cleanup initiative. As of today, Shah and hundreds of volunteers have cleaned up over nine million kilograms of plastic and waste, with hopes to expand their initiative to other beaches in the future.

This story is a part of our Planet Earth series. From mammals to insects and birds to reptiles, we share this great big world with all manner of creatures, large and small. Come with us to faraway places as we explore our great big planet and meet some of its wildest inhabitants.

People used to make fun of him when started doing that. He was the only man cleaning all that dirt.
Hats off👏

I live not too far from here. The beach was filthy.. And now after decades, the turtles came back to nest.. How very glorious!

This is a true hero, not NBA players. I cleaned up my local beach the other day and I plan to expand my efforts. Let’s take care of our planet.

My husband laughs at me when he sees a bag of trash in my car. He says you stop on the side of the road again didn't you? Lol, well, I love God's earth and his nature! People, only the good ones!

Congrats !
I've been doing this on my own for 3 years now. Whenever I'm in the jungle or on a beach I always spend a little bit of time to pick the trash. I won't succeed alone. But I'm doing my part 😊
I know the feeling he got when he's doing it. It's amazing!

We all need more people like him in the world. If I was in Mumbai, I would volunteer my time to clean there too.

There are 2 types of people:
1)The ones that only talk (Politicians, maybe me & us too?)
2)The ones that work (This man)
The slight difference between them makes the major difference!

He's the man. I am so ashamed of me right now. What have I done for the planet? For India? Nothing except debating in forums and in school competitions. Just saying stuff doesn't work. Do it. Just do it.
