I read this book last year and really liked it. This small town slice of life story feels somewhat cozy (despite the horror) - the adventures, the friendship (reminds me as well of my childhood in the 80s). It was also a little like being able to read "It" for the first time again 😊

This was my first Dan Simmons book I've read, and started me out on my journey thru all of his greatest works. I'm a huge fan, and I love all the Hyperion Cantos, his literary and historical fiction, his horror, etc... still a few I need to get to, like Children of the Night, or Ilium/Olympos, but I will in time.

Great book. I’m gonna re read it soon. I found a signed hardcover copy for only a couple of dollars at a used book store.

I too love this book and like you i first read it back in the day and a reread in the last couple years.
I was just five in 1960 but it was the same type of boyhood for me. One of the biggest reasons I love this tale. And your right, it would suck being a kid today. Compared to the adventures we used to have. If you're a old guy like me you will love this book. 👍🧐 Thank you Brian. ❤️

Agree. Have read SoN, but the 2 Dan Simmons novels I listened to were both 10/10. Based on this review, I want to try SoN.

I read about a dozen Simmons novels, this one is top 5 for sure.

My favorite character in this book was Cordie Cooke. As a supporting character, I'm of the opinion that she wasn't in the book enough. Also, the rendering truck . . . stuff of nightmares. I had some minor issues with the book, but overall, I enjoyed it. 8/10.

I wish they said what got him I guess it was the lampreys. I also wish they got back at jt that bully punk but I loved the characters.

I thought they left alot out at spoiler the end they never gave a reason why it happened and what the creatures were. I really enjoyed it the characters were amazing but I just wish they gave more details about why the teachers become evil and were they all dead and were rhe dead ones really they or continues by another evil entity ?

I just started reading Summer of Night. So far, so good. But what I really wanted to throw out there is a question. I've read The Forgetting Moon and The Blackest Heart. Loved them both, by the way. However, I noticed a few characters that drew my attention to the rock band REO Speedwagon. Am I on to something here, Brian? Did I find an Easter Egg in your work?

How does this one compare with "It" by Stephen King, Similar?

I read this one last summer. Pretty good but no King

Trick is to find the arcane abomination in the staring at screens being done by a big chunk of the world's teenagers. It's there.

I finished reading it a couple weeks ago and ive gotta say its pretty boring and uneventful in places, I understand that there’s a build up and that dan was establishing things, but theres quite a bit that could’ve been exercised or condensed. It definitely has some creepy parts and some stuff thats pretty cool, but I honestly thought the ending was pretty dumb.

I know in the beginning when duane is in his room and he hears a voice speak to him and say “duane, we’re coming” i don’t remember that being elaborated on at all, did they ever say that the master was doing that or was it one of the teachers

I didn't care for this novel, but I can still see and smell the rendering truck.
