Hello everyone,

In this week video we are getting into the hard work: scraping and sanding the underwater part of the hull. This, for those who never had to do it, is probably the worst and more exhausting job to do on a boat. We need to see what’s under the antifouling and prepare the keel drop off so, let’s get started.

Hello,
We are Stéphanie and Valéry, our story begins in the hard when we find a neglected boat in the south of France.
Follow the complete refit of this old boat that will require so many thoughtfull and intense boat works.
Come along with us to travel through this journey in our new sailing life.

The antifoul is two colors on purpose. It's an indicator to let's you know when you wear down the outer coat. It's common for ablative type antifouls that wear off on their own over time. When you start to see the under color bleed through too much it's time to recoat.

Nice! -- SOLUTION TO RUDDER ISSUE -- In college one summer I worked in a factory Machine Shop. They had that type of problem separating metal rings and pipe pieces similar to your rudder problem - this is a very common problem. The solution is take a flame, like a blow torch, to the outer ring. The heat expands the size of the ring and the inner part drops down. But protect the fiberglass when adding the flame to the metal ring - easy to do. Works perfectly every time. It would take about 1 or 2 minute of flame/heat on that ring to drop that rudder. You could buy a simple propane torch at a supply store. Next time you will know! Very simple solution.

hi guys another good video, what your doing is gruelling work but at the end of it you will have a great deal of faith in your boat knowing the keel bolts are safe from crevice corrosion, rudder, bearings are good and an epoxy barrier coat will give you years protection against the pox cheers rob nz.

My body aches just watching your video! I jumped ahead in the video to check you actually finished and were still alive and this made me feel better! You have undertaken a huge project for just 2 people but the rewards will- eventually - be huge. Anyone (with money) can buy things but there is a special joy when you make it yourself! As we say in New Zealand - Kia Kaha = Stay strong!

I think the boat has some good new owners who respect her and are going to make her strong and beautiful again! Too bad about the teak deck but the hull, keel, and rudder look like they are coming along fine…. Regards.

I just came across your video. I can relate! We were sanding and bottom painting our boat before spring launch. Even for our small boat, it took 2 days to complete. By the way I really enjoy your cinematic film-making approach. All the best!

A lot of hard work and a great job done. When I first saw your boat in one of the previous episodes I thought - OMG -, but she really seems to be a high-quality construction. That rudder quadrant looked very sturdy ... ;-)
Wishing you all the best for your refit ... !

Hi my friends,
your scraping and sanding habilities are as good as the video making ones. (on video) Looks like you gel coated the hull. At least on youtube, I never saw a sanding job like this. It's really satisfying to see Orriô evolving and getting fit.
One question, You think that will be necessary structural maintenance on the keel? Thanks for sharing. Salut :D

Rudderpost top must have been partly deformed when the boat was built as a security measure not dropping or loosing the rudder completely if it ever were to come loose.

Another great video, I have two questions.
1. Why did you decide to drop the rudder and keel, just curious?
2. What was your thought process for naming your boat Oriyo, and what does Oriyo mean?

Being short sometimes makes one get harder and dirty work. as the one with a beautiful smile is doing overhead work:(.
