On February 20, 1991, during the Gulf War in Iraq, a team of 8 U.S. Army Green Berets were assigned to conduct a reconnaissance mission 100 miles behind enemy lines. The objective of the mission was to observe a Highway.

At dusk, the team's position was compromised by three children, who found their hiding place. The sergeant commanding the team decided to let the children go. Soon, a force of 150 Iraqi soldiers approached their position. The Green Berets team was behind enemy lines on their own, outnumbered and without vehicles to move around. The only option they had was to fight.

In just 10 minutes of combat, the Green Berets had eliminated 40 enemy soldiers, and continued fighting throughout the day, using flares and radio coordinates to guide the F-16 fighters to execute bombing raids against enemy positions.

After dark, the Green Berets were successfully extracted. None of the team members were killed or injured, and it is estimated that they took out over 100 Iraqi soldiers. This was an impressive feat, demonstrating the skill, bravery and determination of the Green Berets in a risky and challenging mission.

Team I worked with had two people that were involved in extraction. Ground team had split into 2 elements. I believe the call had gone out and Chinooks came in to pull them out. My friends opened rear cargo door, pulled ground team in and sat down harnessed to ramp to provide security and suppressive fire. Iraqis I believe had anti aircraft weapons on vehicles. Pilot knew if he reached any substantial altitude, AA would take them out….so he flew as low to the ground as possible the whole way out, with rockets shooting up just in front of or behind them the entire time. Pilot is the reason they’re all still alive today.

I wanted to be a Green Beret when I was a young man during my first enlistment but what stopped me was the idea of jumping out of a perfectly flying airplane. 😊 But I have the utmost respect for the Green Berets and they are an Elite Force that can hold there own against anyone.

That’s why we call them special forces. Skilled and trained.

My dad was one of the F-16 fighter pilots who dropped bombs on the enemy. He said that after the bombs dropped the Iraqi soldiers were obliterated and being incapacitated were easy targets for the special forces to just walk up and shoot. More of a mercy kill. Look him up Jay H Lindell. He got medals for it. Public knowledge

You missed the biggest part. They dropped cas on themselves to prevent being overrun. They hugged each other expecting not to survive. They did. God bless them!

Their integrity and compassionate act of sparing the children at their own peril can not be overstated. Salute you Green Berets, real men, bona fide heroes!

I remember hearing about the op when I was a Ft Bragg. I recall one they called in CAS the f16 pilot drop ordinance that were not really made for CAS so when he dropped them he called back for BDA and did not hear anything for a few seconds. He thought he wiped out the whole ODA team. A few minutes later the ODA came back on the radio and requested the next drop to be even closers..lol

That's some serious kinetic military action against danger close Iraqi soldiers. These SF soldiers bring a skill set to the table necessary for their survival. Awesome job !

Warriors don't get injured, they get wounded. To quote Sgt. Martin from B.O.B. "Injured is when you fall out of a tree."
