As China’s international tourism market increases, there have been an increasing amount of reports about "uncivilized behavior" by Chinese tourists. Chinese tour operators have decided to be proactive against this trend, and are choosing to remind travelers to mind their manners given that they are ambassadors of their country. Within travel hubs throughout the country tour guides have been making it a point to ensure that travelers are well informed about local etiquettes at their destinations.

I literally got pushed with two hands by a Chinese tourist in Vegas watching the Bellagio fountain show. She walked up and pushed me, despite the fact that I was at least a foot taller and probably outweighed her by 40 pounds. I was incredulous at such direct rudeness. She wanted my spot and that’s the way she decided to take it. I pushed back and yelled at her and she looked astonished. How can behavior like this be considered OK by any culture?

I’m an Asian American and I deal with this crap everyday. In my college there’s a large international student population but they don’t even bother to learn English. They get mad at you for not speaking Chinese and they spit on the ground in the school building. Who the hell spits during class onto the floor. They will smoke inside and would get mad if security forces them to leave. Not only that there’s a park near my college. They will literally leave all their trash on the ground and not bother to throw it out. It’s fucking filthy, if you’re visiting a country you weren’t raised in mind your manners.

I went to Bangkok with my family last year and we went to one of the tallest buildings, for a buffet.
There were sooo many Chinese tourists
And I was so shocked cuz we had to wait for 15-20 minutes just to get into the elevator, then after the buffet
We were waiting for the elevator, to go down (we were the first ones to wait)
Then suddenly a huge crowd of Chinese tourists came and just pushed us and my sister and I lost my mom and dad and my brother
*Found our parents downstairs but we had to look for my brother for 1 hour
Turns out the tourists gave him no chance to get in the elevator 🤦🏻‍♀️

I watched a video about Chinese tourists who drove Parisians crazy. They'd spit on the floor inside restaurants and would find it strange that none of the French staff spoke Chinese. There is also a sign in Chinese in the Louvre courtyard that says, "Don't defecate on the museum grounds." It's not written in any other language.

"Ignorance of local culture and regulations" That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. It's common sense to not touch exhibits and speak softly indoors. These people are just plain rude and narcissistic.

I was in Japan and they were loud and disrespectful to the peace of the shrine. They climb on everything. Real show offs.

Hands down the worst tourist around. I'll never forget seeing a Chinese tour group in Disney World 4 years ago and watching as the mother changed her childs diaper in view of everyone in front of Gastons Tavern in Magic Kingdom. She then took the dirty diaper and left it on the ground. I remember two cast members who appear to have been managers immediately disposing of the diaper and then confronting the guide

The Chinese make EXCUSES about being ignorant. Well, look at OTHER people. If people don't know what to do, then DON"T DO it.

I work at a tourist destination in LA and I see dozens of these tour groups weekly. let me tell you: they drive me and my coworkers crazy. They are extremely rude and disrespectful, they leave trash EVERYWHERE, they pretend to not understand me when I'm guesturing for them not to smoke (right next to small children!!), and I can't even tell you all the gross things they've done. Is it really normal in China for small children to just pull down their pants and piss in a public area when we have bathrooms available? is it normal in China not to wash your hands after using the bathroom?? is it normal to just blow smoke in the face of infants??? I honestly can't wrap my head around these tour groups...

And there are ten thousands of them visiting a tiny city everyday. How do you think that city feels? Welcome to Hong Kong.

Oh yes... and in public spaces around Sydney Australia... Chinese parent's allow their children to piss in the street, or alley way... and even in the corners inside buildings like large museums... a disgraceful and disrespectful culture.... and yes I have witnessed these events..

I've been to China several times and I think the problem stems from people simply behaving rudely in their own country, so naturally when they travel overseas, they carry the same rude behaviours with them. The Chinese shouldn't need to be taught manners for the purposes of travelling abroad, they should simply be practising manners as a matter of course every day, including at home. That way when they travel, they simply behave politely as they do back at home.

But no, whenever I go to China, I frequently encounter...
* Absolute lack of table manners (except for covering their mouths when using toothpicks; seems to be the only polite thing they do at the table)
* No sense of turn taking or queuing. Be it on the road or on foot, people frequently push in and shove.
* SHOUTING! There are a lot of Chinese people who need to be mindful to stop using their outdoor voice when indoors!
* Public toilets be like... I don't even want to describe it...
* Smoking manners also non existent. Although smokers everywhere are pretty much bad, Chinese smokers are especially terrible. I've been on buses in China where there are massive "No Smoking" signs, and passengers and even drivers smoke on board!
* Chinese people deface their own cultural relics! Anyone who's been to the Great Wall of China can see that the public part of the wall is _covered_ in graffiti etched into the stones. And it's not even particularly clever graffiti, it's all just "Ping was here." Yeah... that's it. Temples, palaces etc. are all in poor condition. Contrast this with visiting ancient relics in Taiwan or Japan where relics and sites are in immaculate condition because people respect and preserve their heritage!
* They fart in your face as a matter of course. Is this a greeting that they don't teach in phrase books? No, I am not making this up.
* Abysmal customer service (or utter lack thereof). I've had store keepers outright lie to me and even cheat me of my money. The complete reverse of shopping say in Japan or Taiwan.
* Anti-social? My daughter attends both Chinese and Japanese language schools. The parents are her Japanese school are all really friendly and polite, and I've made friends with many other parents there. The parents at her Chinese school are all aloof and keep to themselves. When we come to pick up our children, most of the other parents either keep to themselves with their heads buried in their phones, or to their own cliques. I find the parents are her Japanese school to be far more inclusive.
* Deliberately unhelpful. If you don't speak Japanese but you ask a Japanese person for help in another language, they will often bend over backwards to try and help you. But as a non-Chinese speaker, sometimes when I ask strangers for help, I either get ignored or even yelled at in an abusive tone of voice. Even when I'm trying to write down what I want to say (because I can read/write Chinese characters), they refuse to look at what I'm writing and simply shove their hand in my face. Wow.

^This has been my personal experience anyway.

Plus they need to teach or introduce words "thank you" and "sorry" in their curriculum.

I was once at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport on October 2016, I was about to get to my gate when I saw 3 Chinese children standing on a Snake-Statue of some kind. And there’s a sign that literally says in Thai, English “Do not touch or climb this” And their parents just stood there and watched them. I stood there in disbelief.
