Have STEEL Textured siding on the house since 1996. It is still beautiful. The contractor talked us into buying it and he did a great install job. I never really knew how great a job he did until the years passed!! This week a landscape contractor damaged the low edge of one piece, rear of house, a large ding in plain sight, knee high. I have a spare box of the stuff in the attic. It has been sitting up there untouched since 1996. I hope I can find a repair contractor who knows one has to pull off the damaged piece and the lower edge of the one above to properly fit one new piece. The original contractor is long out of business due to death and I am unskilled to perform such a task (Despite having that siding tool myself)! Steel has no give like the other types. PS, That wood grain textured surface gives steel great protection against hail stones.

You mentioned Kevlar coating on steel siding that reflects heat. I believe you mean Kynar, which is a trade name for PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) resin. PVDF coatings currently offer the highest protection against fading & chalking (and are also the most expensive), while SMP ( silicone modified polyester) coatings are a mid-level finish. At the bottom of the quality spectrum are regular polyester coatings, which are no longer recommended.

When you cut the steel siding, how do you keep the cut end (raw steel) from rusting? I'm not sure why folks are so down in vinyl siding. I'm in northern Ohio. We have some very harsh winters and hot summers. If the house isn't brick, there is a 90% chance it has vinyl siding. Even $600K houses are built with brick or stone on the front and vinyl on the sides and back. Properly installed, vinyl will last at least 40 years.

What is the problem with rusted steel siding? If I like the rusted siding aesthetic, is there another downside? Or is rust bad only because of the look?

Great, informative video! However, I can’t find any prices on ABC Supply website. All it does it let me choose a manufacturer to get info on the products they produce. Can I put decorative mouldings and trims on that? Never seen ones that looks a bit more fancier than straight window mouldings.

Thanks for all the great videos! Any update on the measuring a house for siding video? I did use hover which gave me pretty darn accurate measurements. Matched my field measurements basicly.

Going to be getting quotes for EDCO from arrow building center although I do like menards product and colors. Planning to brake all my trims, integrated j's.
Trying to figure out exterior rigid insulation. House is 140yo with a 70's addition. Has 8in steel on it already. Had a tree hit the house and insurance is giving me RCV for the steel siding, roof, fascia and gutters.

Plaster walls inside with unknown layers of paint. No clue on the insulation in the walls of the original structure.
Been pouring over every building science old house reno details i can find.

I’m doing post frame construction (like a Barndominium). Would steel be lower cost than OSB & vinyl siding? I figure both need the Tyvex.

I paid cash for a fixer upper one month before Covid turned the world upside down, kept me home with my son in online classes, and drained a lot of my savings. It's an interesting house, with a lot of interesting problems. I'm learning as I go. The house has cedar board and batten siding on the second and third stories (it's a stilts house and the bottom story is a large garage and a laundry / storage room and has cheaper siding). The cedar was not maintained, and there is wood rot / old termite / woodpecker and squirrel damage. I'm keeping the board and batten design, and trying decide between the steel siding (wood look) and a Hardie panel type siding. My question is : I've been advised by two contractors to keep the cedar and just put the new siding on top of it. Any thoughts on that? I don't know who to trust.

It will be over cedar. This one is a custom from 1938. The cedar is thick. To nice to call it trash. Only way is over lay. Steel won't burn, that is my issue. It's safety. Can it be safely overlayed over cedar?

We have a single story 50's ranch and need new siding. I want to get steel siding after looking at hardie board, lp board, and vinyl. But finding a steel siding installer/contractor seems next to impossible here. We are in the Bloomington Indiana area. Can you give any help on locating an installer.
