Here it is: our first drive of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton mid-size ute/pick-up. The long-awaited next-generation model is a significant one for the Japanese brand, as it looks to make up ground lost to the newer Ford Ranger/Volkswagen Amarok and Isuzu D-Max/Mazda BT-50 twins.

So, what does the redesigned Triton bring to the table? Well, it takes Mitsubishi's tried and true formula to the next level with a series of significant upgrades, with none larger than the introduction of a twin-turbo version of the familiar 2.4-litre diesel four-cylinder engine.

In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis drives a prototype of the new Triton to find out if its 150kW of power (+17kW) and 470Nm of torque (+40Nm) have been worth waiting for. He also deep-dives its trick Super Select II 4WD system, among other key features.

I can't wait to buy one. If it drives on sand like that please take my money. Mitsubishi quality and definitely performance!

Okay then. Don't mind the look of this 4x4 at all. A 2.4 with more everything makes me wonder if the motor will be okay in the long run. Smaller donks seem the trend though, with even Toyota's new Landcruiser going down that track. Looking forward to the full review in 2024. The new Triton has certainly caught my attention. I've just subscribed.

Twin turbo on a small engine, sounds good, how good is it in the long run? Towing 3.5t? Quieter, yes, serious 4wheeling? Recalls might await.

👍 I drive the MQ and love the car and the engine 4N15, does this car have the same engine with an additional turbo or a completely new engine?
It would have been nice to put AC vents in the console for the kids in the back, my kids always complaining that it is too hot and not enough AC coming from the front, I don't think the roof fan is going to satisfactory. Would I buy one? YES I would.

2024 and using drum brakes. No thanks, my last car with drum brakes was a 1956 VW. I thought we've moved on since then.

is sand in the engine bay a normal thing when driving through the send dunes?

we need a 20k 4x4 for the people who make under 40k a year.

Square wheel archers and that front end on the top spec model are atrocious.

Max torque is at just 1500rpm. Not 1800 as mentioned in this video. The transition is 8 Speed. Not 6 as mentioned in this video. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Needs more power and torque still lagging behind the class leaders.

Another example of vehicles built for the Phillipines/asian market being flogged in Australia as fantastic. Calling it bigger because its length is 1.5 cm longer and 5 cm wider is nothing short of a joke. Triton was always smaller than others and so now it’s caught up, you reviewers are wetting yourselves, wake up Australia we aren’t 4 foot tall, and this looks like an LDV.

I don’t get the point of so called testing it in the dune… more of a dune press launch, road tyres massive bumpers😂. But, looks pretty, don’t mind it for a work ute, most tritons out there are tradies anyway

The moment a UTE has a front bumper with almost zero ground clearance, I lose interest. 😟

Pretty disappointed ! Still got the same crappy rear drum brakes and leaf springs.
How about updating to the 21st century and give us discs and coils all round ! Hell, even my 1988 Nissan GQ Patrol had discs all round !
Also have to worry about the longevity of that little 4 cylinder !

It’s got a manual hand break because it’s got drum rear breaks. Bizarre.

Look old, like 2002 model. Definitely ugly compared to current one. What were they thinking?
