Should YOU get the Barclaycard Avios Plus Card?

Should you get the Barclaycard Avios Plus card? It could be a great way to earn extra avios to pay for business class flights with British Airways, made even easier through the upgrade voucher. But is it worth it? Today I’m covering the key features and benefits of the card, as well as comparing it to the free version of the card as well as the British Airways Premium Plus Amex.

Update on the sign up bonuses: the Barclaycard sign up bonus is unchanged, but the standard sign up bonus on the BA Premium Plus Amex has increased in the last couple of days to 30k points, or 31k with a referral. However, it does require a £6k spend in the first 3 months.

Great video and take on the card. I fairly recently took out the free Barclay avios card for the prime reason of paying my council tax, service charge and ground rent as none of them accepted AMEX. It's win win as I've already met the criteria for a bonus 5k points and got the points on those mentioned above that I would have otherwise lost. 👍

I have the card. I have managed to book one business class reward flight to Mexico but I needed to drop 95, 000 Avios as I was flying in December. You also can only book the upgraded reward flights originating from the UK, which is annoying. So I couldn't book a return flight for my fiancée to fly from Mexico to London. BTW If you have Barclays Avios Rewards on your current account AND a Barclaycard Avios Plus card you actually get four passes for free a year on Dragon Premier Plus. A useful back up when you're NOT flying BA and can't use the lounge (I have silver like you).

Can you get the sign up bonus if you already hold the free version of the card?

I have the free version of both the barclaycard and BA Amex and was tempted to upgrade to the premium Barclaycard

Charles, just watched the video. I understand that I pay Prem Econ avios for a business class flight. Which level of taxes do I pay? Prem Econ or Business? Many thanks

I have Amex and to give an idea, I paid £680 total on return tickets for me and my wife to New York (economy outbount, economy plus inbound, but was fortunate to free upgrade to business through a friend outbound), then a trip to Paris which i had to cancel, but flights to Paris came to £2 total, both were with the voucher!

Hi Charles, I don't know if you can help with this one, although I am in the United Kingdom, most of my expenditure is done in US dollars, I can't find any Avios-rewarding credit cards with REASONABLE F/X charges. Do you have any suggestions?

Ive just used my first barclaycard voucher to upgrade from PE to Club for a caribbean trip. NOt intuitive how to use the voucher but it did all work in the end. Note, AIUI the vouchers do expire after two years.
I guess i could look into the Amex card but I dont like the idea of splitting my points across two accounts, perhaps not enough in either for soemthing useful but enough in one to get soemthing i want. And from a cursory search it seems you cannot transfer Avios to Amex whilst you can in the other direction. So i could end up with points stranded within amex and unable to use them?

Regarding the Dragon pass, I have the travel plus pack on my Barclays account and I get 6 visits to lounges per year
