Many people love popcorn and think it’s a healthy snack. But, is popcorn actually healthy or not?

Is popcorn keto-friendly? A lot of people, including myself, love popcorn, but is it healthy? I don’t think popcorn is healthy or good for those who want to lose weight.

A few problems with popcorn:
• About 95% of popcorn is GMO
• Popcorn is highly glycemic
• Microwave popcorn has diacetyl, which has been linked to bad problems

A good popcorn substitute to have on an infrequent basis is popped sorghum. Sorghum is gluten-free, non-GMO, and it has the lowest glycemic index of all of the grains. You can cook it in coconut oil and put grass-fed butter and sea salt on it.

Thanks for watching! Instead of popcorn, you may want to try popped sorghum.

I really appreciate your videos each day. They're short, to the point, and without the fillers that so many other Youtubers add.

Call it lazy, an excuse or whatever, but I have tested the popcorn/keto question for a solid year. For the first 5 months, I had zero popcorn and lost 42 pounds doing nothing but pure keto diet. The second half, I did pure keto and one snack which was popcorn. I did this nearly every day for 6 months. I lost 2 pounds. So i managed to maintain my weight lost but completely stalled on losing anymore. I also did a more 18/6 diet to see if that would help in weight lost if my sugers weren't spiked all day long. Popcorn just completely killed any weight loss I would have had. I found that if I stuck to have it only when I went to the movies, (once a month or every couple months not counting summer which can be a little higher) I had no trouble losing while on keto. I would say don't do it as a snack, its terrible if your trying to lose.

Thanks Dr. Berg, I love your videos.

Once a week my husband eats popcorn (stovetop) with butter and pink salt. 2 TBSP makes 2 cups popped. Using coconut butter flavored oil for the cooking medium. He's still losing weight. No diet will be sustainable if you can't occasionally have the "must have" on your list.

This is sooo worthy of a reboot!!! Not just the popped version but also as a grain alternative and flour alternative. If you elect to do so, please let the ppl know for best results as a cooked grain, to soak overnight like one would with dry beans (lesson learned). It’s versatility is cool - akin to hemp seeds or quinoa etc. I’ve yet to pop it but, I’m discovering fail safe methods on YT for best results that differs from popping corn.

This is the saddest day of my life! 😭 Popcorn is my favorite snack!

Sprinkling nutritional yeast on popcorn with olive oil used to be a favorite---very happy to see I can do this with sorghum, thank you!

Popcorn is supposed to be extremely high in polyphenols. I use organic popcorn with coconut oil and sea salt. It doesn't give me a blood sugar surge. However corn is a high lectin food and sorghum is not, so that's good to know.

I've "written off" popcorn as an option ... thrown my usual temper tantrum over the loss, and moved on :) But thank you for this anyway.

Thank you SO MUCH FOR THIS! I'd say popcorn is the single biggest thing I miss since starting keto and IF. Such a life saver to have an alternative

Man. This is hard to hear. I love popcorn. I won't give it up completely yet. But knowing about sorghum gives me some new hope.

You’re amazing Dr Berg, trying to find us an alternative like that 😀 It’s funny but I gave up popcorn over a year ago due to digestive upsets. Now thanks to you, I know I did the right thing ☺️

I don't really care for popcorn BUT popcorn isn't gmo. It's different from sweet corn. Also gluten free.

I've applied your studies and they make so much sense. But people really can't digest these facts. They still think fat is bad for the body and Sugar is all they need!
Thank you for making us aware...:)

I love having alternatives, but this is why diets ALWAYS fail. Yes, take out refined sugar and yes, eat real food. Absolutely you should intermittently fast. And maybe you are so insulin resistant that you really shouldn’t have any grains - not ever. But it is impractical and unrealistic to even suggest that someone shouldn’t very occasionally have something they love to eat. I will have a slice of homemade pie at Thanksgiving. I absolutely will have a small piece of cake to celebrate the birth dates of my children or at an important event like a wedding. If my husband and I have the opportunity to have a child free movie night, I am going to have some popcorn. This happens once or twice a year. The “all things in moderation” doesn’t work, but neither does complete abstinence. Food has always been a way to celebrate - throughout human history - and I intend to honour my human heritage. No one got fat eating a slice of pie twice a year. We get fat when we turn every day into celebration.

I only eat organic popcorn, and my blood sugar is great. I don't get the energy bursts and crashes from sugar like other people get but my sugar always comes with fat and/or protein, so maybe that's why. It doesn't seem any different than any other food to me. I'm underweight right now bc of unknowingly having total gluten intolerance for 2 yrs. However, I have adopted many of Dr. Bergs' diet recommendations. He is the best 😊

Great Video!!! I agree, with everything you say, but there's more. I'm an expert at popping sorghum. Let me emphasize that you should seek out "Popping Sorghum"; there are 30 varieties and not all of them pop, not all of the sorghum you buy has the right moisture content, these are key to popping sorghum. More on nutrition....Sorghum is LECTIN FREE, , one of 2 grains that are LECTIN FREE, thus it is in the top 12 non-alergen foods. And I suggest, within reason, that you could eat it every day...it's that good for you!

I am eating organic stovetop popcorn. There’s still the problem of the glycemic index but I eat it with a lot of butter to buffer it and just eat it once in a while. Tbh, I don’t love it as much but I am using it as a substitute for potato chips, so it’s relatively better because I can eliminate seed oils and eat more grassfed butter.
