thank you so much for this!! I've tried playing guitar on and off for years and now I'm going back and starting from the basics, and I always thought you were supposed to hit all of the strings in a given chord in the upstrum. I never thought about strumming away from the guitar. so I would force myself to mute strings to avoid possibly sounding the wrong notes in the upstrum. it's such a relief to hear that it's ok (and encouraged even) to never hit the lower strings on the upstrum!!
