On September 23, 2024 a group of U.S. Air Force F-16s were scrambled to intercept two Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers escorted by two Su-35s. Once they arrived, the American F-16s got a first-hand look at why Russian fighter pilots are often described as "unsafe and unprofessional."

Russian pilot "WTF? Unsafe and unprofessional? This move is right out of Top Gun 2."

Sounds to me like Ivan doesn’t give a damn what we think.

Nonsense. I’m sure the Russian pilots know EXACTLY what they are doing and are doing EXACTLY what their commanders have ordered them to do since they have done it repeatedly over a period of time and at different areas. What you call “unsafe and unprofessional” the Russians call “ routine maneuvers.”

Remember when Turkey shot down a Russian jet and there was no war, Pepperidge Farms remembers.

F-16 pilot: Russian aircraft. What are your intentions?
TU-95 Bear pilot: I am a Russian Military aircraft conducting lawful military activities outside national airspace. I am operating with due regard....
SU-35 pilot: "Leeee Rooooyyy Jenkins!"

“And not only that, but Russian fighter pilots regularly arrive at their combat units…”

“Drunk” immediately popped into my head.

Iran’s navy did that with a sea mine. It damaged one of our ships. They entered the find out phase of their training. In a standard work day, 8 hours. They lost 50% of their navy.

They watched Top Gun and thought that's how pilots are supposed to act.

Don't get me wrong, I love the movies, but realistically Maverick would have had his wings taken away.

Lol, this may be “unprofessional” by US standards, but one thing you can’t accuse that pilot of is being not well trained. Otherwise the planes may well have collided.

Americans in films are usually such tough guys, but in real life they immediately start whining about an “unprofessional and unsafe maneuver” instead of showing their pilots that they too can intercept like that

And they wonder why they don't have air superiority over Ukraine.

I saw ruskie comments saying:

"If an american did this, they would be called brave and strong."

False. American pilots would simply never do this. It's by the book or weapons free, not a lot of inbetween. Respectfully.

The Chinese are the same. Their ships and aircraft are just as unprofessional. They’ve done dangerous things like shining laser lights into pilot’s eyes, dumping chaff in front of planes, etc. Very dangerous and unprofessional.

calling a bully unsafe and unprofessional does not deter the bully.
