Getting your teen to open up about their problems is tough, but you can do it. Here are quick tips from Arley Tucker, a Teen Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) therapist with Center for Family Services. Teen Triple P is free for Palm Beach County families.

First, remember to respond rather than react, Tucker says. Parents need to keep their emotions in check. Parents also need talk to each other before going into the conversation so they have the same approach and same goals.

Set up a family meeting, Tucker says. It could be a meal. It doesn't have to be something formal. But it does have to be a time where everyone is focused on what is being said. That means everyone- children and parents- should put their smartphones away.

Ask open-ended questions. Expect some answers that you might not like. Keep your cool.

Teen Triple P is a FREE program for Palm Beach County families that offers one-on-one sessions to address teen behavior and issues. The program is designed to strengthen the parent-child relationship and create an open line of communication.

Teen Triple P works with you and your teen to establish expectations and consistency. The goal is to create a more peaceful home with less stress and less yelling. The program is available in English, Spanish and Creole.
