I love how Matthew could always challenge Mary, despite being madly in love with her. Here Mary tries so hard to make him admit his feelings for her, but Matthew changes the course of the conversation in a way that Mary has no choice, but to confess her feelings to him. Just brilliant.

One may dislike Mary but her immediate decision to tell Matthew about Pamuk shows great integrity. It is also a beginning of the spiral Mary made and her fear led her from one bad decision to the next right until Robert made her see that entire life of misery is a high price to pay for a mistake. That's also why Mary is such a divisive character.

Again -- one of THE most beautiful and important scenes in all of Downton Abbey. Matthew (Dan Stevens) is simply superb -- spellbinding, actually. His acting, his delivery of lines, is brilliant. And of course, adding that to his incredible beauty is just too much to take. Boy, did Julian Fellowes know what he was getting in Dan Stevens. As Matthew, he is so charismatic -- a blending of the character created by Fellowes and Dan Stevens' acting chops and devastatingly handsome face and charm. Not just his incredible blue eyes, but that deep resonant package.
