Matthew probably intuitively sensed that beneath Mary's cold and hard exterior, there was a vulnerable young woman feeling trapped and powerless in the world. He didn't blame her for resenting him in the beginning. Once she began opening up to him, he caught glimpses of the real Mary. That's why he never stopped loving her.

Being an almost 50 year old man who has watched a LOT of television series over the years, I can definitively say that I have NEVER been so affected by the loss of a character before as with Matthew. As many others have commented, it broke me! A testament to the writing, actors, direction, and editing, how could you not feel something for these two and want them to have their happily-ever-after. I'm coming to this series many years after the fact (2022) but I can almost hear the collective sobs still echoing when this series first aired. I made the mistake of watching the season 3 finale right before bed. What a big mistake! Probably had my worst night of sleep in years! Thank you for putting this collection together to remember their journey together. DA is now one of my all-time favorites and you only get on that list if I make an emotional connection to the characters. My heart goes out to Mary (I know she's a fictional character but that's my point!) :)

I think true love is what Mary and Matthew had. They brought out the best in each other ❤ everytime I rewatch the show I feel every heart thumping, heart wrenching moment between these two. their chemistry is amazing and their story is one of my favorites . I don't believe in soulmates but Mary and Matthew were made for each other.

I terribly despise the end of season 3; I fell in love with Matthew. He has an angelical face and his personality is highly noble (like mother, like son). I still watch the series but stop right before the accident in season 3.💔❤

The first time Mary went to the station saying good bye to Matthew and gave him small kiss on his cheeks I always thought Mary was going to confess that she’s still in love with him (she asked Anna’s opinion about honesty and how she should be honest with her feeling), but Mary didn’t confess anything to Matthew. She knew that Matthew already engaged to Lavinia. I was frustated with the show thinking how it could’ve been easier for them to be together if Mary was HONEST about her feeling. But then I realized, Lady Mary is always been a women with honor and pride, she wouldn’t ruin Matthew relationship with Lavinia. And If Mary had confessed to Matthew in that station scene, Matthew, as the same as Mary. He is also a men with dignity that wouldn’t betray his fiance. I think it was beautiful for them not betray their lover that time (tho Mary clearly didn’t have any feeling for Sir Richard). She and Matthew both potrayal of loyalty to their own lovers that time (Richard/Lavinia). I’m glad of course they finally ended up together after long journey they had gone through. They really meant for each other.

There's is truly a love story for the ages!!! The best I've seen in a long long long time in either TV, movies, or books. I didn't realize this until now and I'm pretty far into the series actually after Matthew dies. But, I always knew that she could be vulnerable with him and he would still love her. However I didn't realize the she begins to be vulnerable and open up to him very early on in the first season. Not until I watched this video and it goes way back.
