Whether by design or sheer competitiveness; the late Mickey Thompson issued a challenge during the latter part of 1972 when he introduced the first of one of many new vehicles he believed would carry him and son Danny to victory in off-road racing. Parnelli Jones began it all the year before with a Mexican 1000 victory in the Dick Russell designed "Big Oly" Bronco - a revolutionary vehicle of its time - prepared by none-other than Off-Road Hall of Fame Inductee Bill Stroppe.

Coming off a victory at the Parker Dam 500 in February, and a tight second in June at the Baja 500, Mickey Thompson told Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe his new Chevy truck - "Big Red" would stomp all over and crush the tin can "Big Oly" Bronco. We were at Mike's Sky Rancho during pre-running for the '72 Mexican 1000. This was the first time the "Sky Ranch" would be on a race course. However, some of the racers crossed over to near San Vicente from Trinidad (it was optional). The first 1000 to start in Mexicali was won by PJ and Big Oly.

It's hard to believe that Parnelli Jones had competed against Mickey Thompson.

The Big Oly has been sold to Mecum at Indianapolis for 1.87 Million Dollars.

Good Orderly Direction: I have a big decision to make; so "bajaflo"? - I pray that your selected term "speechless" = "How did he keep this interesting inside story for so long?" or "When did he get this idea there would be 'healing' with true, good-natured adventure?" I want to do and have done Spanish versions.

I am assuming bajaflo is of Good Off-Road Dedication.

Last week both Walker Evans and Mitch Mayes (1973 B.S.C. "Baja Mil") told me the amazing final miles of this peninsula run...
