In the first Addams family movie (the one from the 90s) Thing does use ASL to spell. It's the scene where Thing tells Gomez that Morticia is in trouble. Thing starts to sign so fast Gomez can't keep up, so Thing starts tapping a spoon in Morse code. But it's a good idea and they should do it in the Wednesday series.

I was actually super surprised that he didn't in Wednesday since he did in the original...it would've helped a lot

honestly when i first started watching the show i thought he would actually be signing, but then once i started seeing more of it i was kind of disappointed they didn’t have Thing signing. so i would definitely love to see Thing sign in season 2!

he did fingerspell a couple of times but it was so fast and people responded too quickly for it to make sense

My great grandfather, great grandmother, and my great uncle were all deaf on my maternal side of the family except for my grandmother who was a sign language interpreter for her entire family and also at the company she worked for before she retired. I learned ASL from her (specifically Californian “dialect” as the signs do differ somewhat from state-to-state) so I could communicate with that side of the family before they had all passed. Sorry for all this pretext, but just so you know: my maternal grandmother isn’t deaf, but she is a great interpreter who taught me.

I just sat down to binge Wednesday with my grandma two days ago. I didn’t know she was such a huge fan, and the way her lil ole lady face just lit up when she saw Thing appear on-screen was so priceless and wholesome.Apparently her favorite character is Thing from the original. But of course, this sweet moment was short lived right when Thing began “signing” nonsense.

I had already watched a few episodes with my fiancé whenever it had first aired, but I had no idea that was her fave because I would definitely warned her before watching. My grandma literally threw her hands up in the air and said the exact same thing you said in this short, like really? Why did Tim Burton not go with finger spelling like the original had done so, instead of making up all of these nonsense gestures? I thought it would have been a nice little nod to the deaf community.

SEASON 2; I’M COUNTING ON U 🤟🏻

Given the story of the Addam’s family, it would make sense if Thing knows several sign languages, maybe at various levels of fluency.

He does in the 90's film as well. There's a home where Gomez says 'i can't understand you when you stuttur' cause he keeps signing the same letter

Honestly was suprised ut wasn’t incorporated. He is clearly communicating with Wednesday but it would be so awesome to incorporate the language in the new season!

I don’t know why but you doing sign language with your nails are so satisfying 😩💗

That was the first thought I had when I saw thing communicate. It would be such an easy place to put in representation that would add something to the character rather than thing just making random hand gestures.

i feel like there some shots of Thing fingerspelling the beginnings or end of certain names in Wednesday. it's a little stylized but it was definitely asl alphabet. i think they should totally show the whole shot, maybe even talk about it when he meets a new friend who signs??? it would add so much for sure!!

I’m watching the show right now. Not all the time, but a lot of the time he *does* use finger spelling ASL. When I first saw him using it I actually got really excited because I’ve been practicing my finger spelling asl.

Yeah! I completely agree he’s a hand that needs to communicate and in Wednesday he just taps and not even Morse when there’s a perfectly logical and real way for him to communicate

The actor who played Thing was Victor Dorobantu, a magician from Romania (as the show was filmed in Romania). This may have been why American Sign Language was not incorporated.

I was so confused what thing was supposed to be saying and/if they either didn’t know how to sign ASL or this is a different thing he was doing

I agree with you! On your previous post I had the same thought that there is a version of Thing that uses ASL. There was a scene with Thing rushing to deliver a message about Morticia and Gomez was all "Slow down! It's terrible when you stutter!". It was a scene where the nonverbal character had such personality, and you could see the various ways it tried to communicate when it was overwhelmed, from trying to write, to tapping morse code with a spoon.

Thank you so much. Honestly. Because of you, I am teaching myself ASL. Every time I see a video with you signing a word I know, I get so happy.
When you said
“too” (like as in also)
“family”
“finger spelling”
“sign language”
“think”
i was like “I know that!!!” Thank you so very much. Love you! 🤟

In one of the Addams Family
movies thing does use sign language! I forget which one though, its one of the ones Christina Ricci plays Wednesday. Thing ended up signing too fast so he used morse code to say that someone was kidnapped.

EDIT:SPOILER ALERT FOR WEDNESDAY
I thing actually tries to sign in the show Wednesday to Enid, but signs too fast for her so he plays charades to tell Enid that Wednesday is in trouble. I think it’s in the last episode of season one.
