Sometimes what I've found is they've had the disposal replaced and the installer forgot to pop the plug for the dishwasher drain.

You need to pin up the hose with a u-bend or a clamp, too. It's called a "high loop." From a home inspection site as the top google result: "The high loop is necessary for 2 reasons. The first is to ensure proper drainage of waste water during the drain cycle and prevent siphoning. The second is to prevent contaminated water from the garbage disposal or sink drain from back-flowing into the dishwasher."

Had a call once for the same reason. First thing l notice was a brand new disposer. You experienced know where l'm going with this. The box store installer forgot to bust out the center in the connection for the dishwasher. Once i did that it all worked as designed! 10 minutes and $75.⁰⁰ richer!!

I have that exact dishwasher. After you pull that filter out there’s a screen you can also pull out to clean. Then have the customer use Glisten brand dishwasher cleaner. That stuff works like magic. My dishwasher was smelling so bad no matter how much I cleaned it until I used that cleaner. Also on the door is a rectangle vent that pops off that can be cleaned too.

Is the hose hung up high? If it’s dangling down the water from the disposal just runs down the hose and into the DW. I usually hang the hose up as high as it can go in the cabinet to prevent this.

I am new to owning all these appliances and I've asked all my friends and family that have had homes for years and every one said there wasn't anything in the dishwasher that needed to be pulled out and cleaned periodically. I'm gonna go check mine in the morning and CLEAN THAT FILTER!!

I know this maybe dumb but I did not know you had to do this it is 1:34 in the morning and I just did this but mine pops out the bottom fan and then the rest of the filter and I cleaned it out thank you so much for teaching me this I'm amazed lol❤😂

I'm glad the 10yo DWs in my small apartment complex are very easy to diagnose (no computer hookup needed). One of the pumps has a bad design where it melts plastic near a bearing over time, so I've had to replace a bunch! As a handy-andy, I think the DW is the least annoying appliance to service

Hard water can mess up those washer filters. I think you can soak it in vinegar.

Awesome of you to take the job. Doesn't always have to be complicated, and the steps you took are simple and quick. Even if it's billable your customer wouldn't have to pay much for the fix. And if it isn't cleared out by those steps, not much time wasted.

I've ran a 1/4" cable the dishwasher hose before to unclog it. I like the shop vac idea better

Great work troubleshooting & getting the problem solved.

That's amazing. I knew to clean the filter but I didn't know how easy it was to clean out the drain line.

It's odd in some places in this country, there is no air gap. I do appliance repair and that air gap definitely makes a "dishwasher leaking or not drain" super easy. But I can also charge more because after the air gap is a plumber issue. So, I can instead just charge the home warranty company much more labor for maybe 10 minutes of actual work. And they'll pay it instead of having to spend even more money get a plumber and keeping the work order open for longer.

Good video ... only thing I wood add is that you start out with that shop vac bucket/canister "CLEAN" ... so you can see what IF anything comes out of a plugged pipe / hose / tube ... you know, that cylindric thing that transports fluid from one spot to another, or everywhere if it leaks : )
