Hello friends,

Welcome to the very first episode of my Work-Life Diaries! After taking a little break from YouTube, I spent some time figuring out the direction I want to take with my content. I initially thought that wrapping up my job search series was an opportunity for me to move away from work-related videos. But the truth is, work is such a huge part of my life, and there’s still so much I want to share with you all.

Thanks to your feedback and encouragement, I’ve decided to continue sharing snippets of both my professional and personal life. In this episode, I’m diving into my first week at my new job and sharing how I’m crafting my work persona. I hope you enjoy following along as I navigate this new chapter!

xx,
Julia

I understand your thought process about being yourself but not to much at work for this or that reason, but something my mom taught me many, many years ago was everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time. You are a young, hard working woman who definitely deserves the work position you have, or you wouldn’t be there. You are naturally a great person, don’t hide yourself. If others have a problem or can’t move beyond the past, that is their problem, not yours. You are amazing, show the world that!❤

Julia, it is called decision fatigue. You're making all of these new decisions (new work environment, new work commute, new people) that you're initially being overwhelmed. You'll be okay after 2 -3 weeks. You can do this!

8:30 I resonate with this 100% being an East Asian woman and looking younger than my counterparts. People always tell me it's a compliment if someone thinks I look young but they don't understand the struggle of not being taken seriously in the workplace. Definitely something I am also working on in improving the way I carry myself, speak, etc

totally relate to not being taken seriously in the workplace as someone that looks really young. I also have a soft spoken, higher pitched voice. such a hard line to straddle between being seen as assertive but also social and fun. i haven't quite figured it out yet.

I know what you mean, Julia. Coming from a heavily male-dominated industry, as a young-looking woman (young for my age, anyway lol) I had to carefully craft my image. Assertiveness was key but in a way that earned respect. It was a daily task lol but was such a game-changer for me. I ended up loving my teammates and was treated with respect.

i think its a good thing that you listen to yourself and sleep 10-12 hours until your body adjust and its pretty normal honestly. All the new information, environment & being with new people must be exhausting.

have you ever consider paying someone to edit your video ? idk just a random idea to help you manage how busy you are. ❤

Sweetie, in the black community we call it code switching. And it is exhausting.

Going back to a routine schedule is exhausting. Rest up and give yourself permission to rest. ❤

Julia - just be yourself, you have nothing to be ashamed of and only things to be proud of can see you being very well liked and respected just for who you are as you also come across very modest and humble, yet intelligent.

I'm a new sub and after binge watching 10ish video I'm happy to say I absolutely love your content! I can't say I relate to your life too much, I'm a 30 something mum but maybe that's why I enjoy it and I love your personality. You're officially my new comfort youtuber.
wishing you all the best.

Here’s my recommendation for your new Work Life series: “Dare to Lead” It’s a book by Brene Brown. The subtitles on the book jacket say it all: “Daring greatly and rising strong at work” “Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.” Good Luck, Julia!

5:00 BTW, FTC guidelines require *clear disclosure* of sponsorships, which for videos entails *not just a caption* but a mention in the video itself, it doesn't need to be verbal, it can be a text overlay, but it should be there.

I might have missed it, but that's also kind of the point. Really shouldn't have to be digging to the bottom of your video description to find out that the camera thing was a sponsorship...

Hi Julia, thank you for sharing. I’m in a similar situation at work, where it's male-dominated, and most of my colleagues are much more experienced. I’ve definitely made the mistake of revealing too much about myself. Before switching to finance a few years ago, I worked as a flight attendant, which was a choice I made because I wanted to. Although I don’t have many years of experience in finance, I’ve been continuously studying and learning. Still, I often feel belittled at work, and there are times when I’m spoken to as if I’m less competent. It’s fascinating how people’s perceptions can change based on your job, background, or ethnicity. In reality, I graduated from the top university in my country and speak several languages.

Currently, I’m learning data analytics online and aim to move into the finance tech space. Side note: I’m also a Cantonese speaker working in North America

Dang Julia, that camera is NOICE! I have a niece who's about your age and I think she has potential to become a content creator. This would make a good Christmas gift for her. 😸

I found your videos at the right time. I have been looking for a new job since separating from the Air Force. I've felt lost and worried about what the future holds for me. I'm happy to say that I have found a new job that pays me what my experience and clearance is worth! Thank you for posting and being transparent!

Hi Julia! Love your videos as always, as a work from home girly myself I use the Logitech Brio 501 camera - to preface it is NOT under $30, but the splurge is worth it. It has numerous features that allow you to adjust the zoom in/out, brightness, contrast, anything and everything. Keep it up and the routine will get easier with time <3
