Well the legend has always been that HHH nixed the angle when he learned that the plan was for Stephanie to leave him for Angle. It was one of the best storylines of 2000.

I think what happened with story was that Rikishi bombed as a heel against the returned Austin. Austin was supposed to be the main event at WrestleMania the next year, so there was a risk of him cooling off he it stayed just with Rikishi. So Triple H (who just turned babyface) turned back to heel again to feud against Austin. It felt very rushed and didn't feel like it was the plan all along, so I think that's why the feud was cut short. Which is a shame because it was one of the best stories going in 2000, if not THE best!

Stephanie told a story on The Howard Stern show once where Vince once wanted to do an angle where himself and Stephanie were going to have an onair romantic/incestious relationship, but Stephanie was too grossed out about it and shot it down, so maybe Kurt was right about Vince getting off on it.

Its still one of the most memorable moments of Kurts Career and it was funny too. The storyline was fun... but it wasnt as creepy and unnecessary as the storyline angle with Sharmell and Booker 🤣🤦🏾‍♂.
