Growing Radish Seed Pods To Eat - It's Just As Easy As It Looks

To be honest, the first time I let my radishes go to seed, I didn't know that seed pods were edible. Now that I know, it's hard to not let at least one or two produce pods just so we can eat some.
Anyone who has grown radishes for very many years knows that if you leave them in the ground long enough, they start to produce flowers. Most people pull them well before that happens. But if you let them grow, they can get very tall and produce quite a few flowers. Each one of those flowers will end up forming a seed pod. If you let the seed pods dry out, they will produce seeds that you can plant the next year. But if you pick them while they are plump and crisp, they are very good to eat.
When they are plump and firm, radish seed pods are crisp and crunchy with a mild radish flavor. Then there is a hint of spiciness that is pleasant and not overwhelming like some hotter radishes can be.
We use radish seed pods much like we use sugar snap peas. They can be used in a stir fry, eaten fresh in a salad, or eaten with a dip like you would with any other vegetable.

I love radish seed pods and since they're such a bountiful harvest towards the end of summer (and end of fall cause I do a 2nd planting of radish, after summer, for a fall harvest with winter radish) I quick pickle a couple jars to have over the winter. Just a simple vinegar, sugar, water, red pepper flake, a dried white oak or grape leaf, and s&p boiled and put over the pods in a jar to lightly cook then sealed. Great way to preserve the harvest! Thanks for the tip on squeezing them, sometimes I get a fibrous one in there and it's a bit hard to pick those ones out!

I wondered if the pods on my radish plants were good to eat. After seeing your blog on YouTube, I tried them and loved them! So thanks 🙏!

I have never eaten radish seedpods. I can’t wait to try them in a salad.

I throw them into stir fries and they are delicious. It's interesting how we have become conditioned to believe there are only certain parts of the plants we can eat. I started putting sweet potato leaves in with my greens. They were good and best of all, they were free!

I’ve never had radish seed pods. They’d make a nice crunch in a stir fry.

I’ve let my red and daikon radishes go to seed SPECIFICALLY because YouTube recommended your video. Blossoms are open. Can’t wait for the pods! Thanks for this!

And hear I was just letting them go for seeds. Wow! I just ate 2 and I am very impressed! For me the seed pod was better then the radish itself. Thank you for the great info! What a great summer surprise👍🏻

We learned that they were edible last year. We have eaten them fresh from the garden, stir fried, and my husband tried pickling them once, but we had picked those ones too late so the pickled ones were too fibrous. We'll have to try them again. I think they would be good in a veggie soup. Thank you for your video. It had a lot of information that the other videos I watched left out.

That's a new one for me, I didn't know the seed pods were edible. I think I'll plant a new crop and let them go to seed, just to taste them! That sounds like something I'd probably enjoy. Thanks for that! ~Margie

We grew black spanish radishes which are a good baseball sized radish. I've let the 2 largest go to seed and they are just now putting on seed pods. I really want to save the seeds because the germination and uniformity was excellent with this batch. I don't usually eat the pods but I'll give it a try when they have more. Thank you for this tip! Happy 4th and have a great weekend!
