The only two reasons they backed down are 1) 0:40, meaning they lost potential sales money (from unknowing folks who won't be able to play the game in a few weeks), and 2) Sony found out it will go against the EU UCPD and GDPR, and that they will face huge fines when (not if) they lose the lawsuit.

This is basically Sony saying, "Sorry we can't scam you without facing financial and legal issues." Don't give them a thumbs up for this, because they would if they could.
