Architects always look for software that combine, Ease of use, speed, and
realistic renders to finish their projects, it is the last step of a hard and long process but it can be the most important one, it has to be perfect and it has to reflect reality so that the client would have a vivid idea about his project and how it will turn out to be in the end, some of the most known software for rendering are lumion and Vray so which one is better for rendering your projects?

2nd-year architecture student here. I have briefly both used both rendering software. While I agree Lumion is quicker to learn and operate, an issue not really mentioned is the system requirements of both softwares. Lumion requires a ton of RAM as well as a top-notch graphics card and screen resolution. If your laptop doesn't meet the requirements it can end up freezing when using Lumion. V-ray has lower system requirements hence is much less of a drain on your laptop’s performance.

Lumion is for people who also have active social life

I do vray for 10 years and recently started using lumion for exterior projects and it takes me 4 hours from start to finish and two more hours for like 10 8k renderings. The quality is never even close to vray but it's really good enough for the time and effort spend. The thing I currently hate is that it gives you a wide angle as default and if you want to achieve a bit more orthographic angle like at least 60mm it treats the models and especially grass as if they're really far away and doesn't render them properly. I have to sacrifice the looks for that reason. Hopefully they fixed that in the 11th version

Vray : For people who working primarily on Still image and can benefit from the program even for minimum Computer Specs.
Lumion : For Archviz primarily making Architectural videos. Lumion is relatively more stable than Vray and have more friendly user interface. beware you have to spend decent amount of money for using Lumion since it demand high specs.

I've been working with render engines for the past 12 years. They got easier and easier to use.

In my opinion it's no use investing in a complicated software. Lumion will be photorealistic in 1-5 years. So atm I'm using lumion mostly as I post process everything in photoshop for a long time anyway.

To me vray is the best realistic render. The problem is that it takes forever to render an image. U really need a powerful computer and I have a good one but then when u modify your image u have to wait forever for another render of your image. That is frustrating. And I am talking about images. Forget it if u want to render videos. Lumion is quite the opposite. Images and render are really fast and most important of all, Lumion is EASY TO USE AND MODIFY. The quality is really really good if u learn to manipulate your settings. I still use vray but Lumion is my top one. Greetings.

Lumion : A3 size full render : 1 minutes / A1 Size full render : 5 minutes (Quality : 9/10)
Vray : A3 size full render : 2 hours - 4 hours / A1 Size Full render : 4 Hours - 1 Days (Quality 10/10)

Long time use Vray, just start move to Lumion 9. because Lumion is Champion for Productivity.

In the middle of the presentation to client, client said.. " I dont like this type of finish, could you suggest me something else"
Lumion user : " owh, not a problem, I'll change it and you'll see the result on the fly.. "
Vray user : "hmm.. sure no problem, I'll show you my suggestion in another 3 month"

I still like Vray for interiors because of its accurate material rendering as for Lumion its great for environment & architectural renders

Both are good rendering software, just depends on the user. But somehow Time is very Important for Architects and Engineers, So lumion is the answer.

you cant compare the two. Not by a mile. A better comparison would be Lumion vs Twinmotion.
If you want to compare Vray you have to compare other ray tracers like Corona.

Both are great and tested but vray 5 now has a huge changes they have real-time render just like enscape and photoreal rendering with just a minimum requirement needed.

Architects use Lumion or Twinmotion for in-house renders and videos, VRay like most raytracers is cheaper than Lumion but takes far more resources in terms of skills and time for every project, as well as investment in building / buying an object library, which is why it's used typically by professional rendering companies, rather than small-midsize archi firms.

If I need a project less than a week i turn into lumion, If i have time id still use corona rather than Vray

I like Lumion so much and think it's the best to me

Lumion users prefer to make it to their child’s little league game.

v ray is on a completely different league in terms of rendering capabilities, interior or exterior. The only good thing about lumion is the fact that it's so easy to use. However, It'd be great if you could do a comparison between vray, arnold, octane, redshift, and cycles.

Lumion is godlike for fast yet detailed visualization but you'll never win archviz competitions or get featured on architecture magazines with it. It's the "working employee" tool that gets shit done. No hustle for when boss asks for a change. Want physical accuracy for your godrays and your glass caustics? Get v-ray.

vray is the most beautiful and best because it provides realistic and professional images with the best quality, you can control the material settings better and wider options in the settings and the size of the program is small and does not exceed 1GB and does not need high operating requirements
