DISRUPTIVE CRYPSIS ☆ CAMOUFLAGE ☆ INVERTEBRATES IN THE MEERKAT MAGIC VALLEY RESERVE

Family: Mantidae

Order: Insecta

Phylum: Arthropoda

Kingdom: Animalia

The praying mantis, mantid, praying mantid often mimics plants in order to hide from predators and prey using disruptive crypsis. There are around 2000 species known.

The mantids front legs have characteristic enlarged femurs that are lined with spines that close in a claw like mechanism against the tibia.

Some mantis species use aggressive mimicry to look like flowers to attract their prey to them, rather than hide from their prey.

Certain mantis species can easily hide in plain sight and can even use behavioural movements to mimic the swaying movement of vegetation in a breeze.
