The quote was taken out of context and a radio station used it to promote a Beatle burning which the whole thing was a cheap publicity stunt by the radio station to drum up business for their last place station.

This is a misquote or rather an edited quote. Watch the film of the quote. Lennon was answering a question about the fans' reactions to their music. Lennon responded with saying that more people attend their concerts than attend church. Its like we're more popular than Jesus Christ.
