This was a unique, powerful, haunting but healing performance by Madonna and the Batukadeiras women from Cape Verde Islands where Batuque music and dance originated from many centuries back during the trans-Atlantic slave trade era when Cape Verde became the hub for holding, sorting/trading and shipping of African slaves to the Americas. Most of the women slaves were left on these islands to work the fields as the slave traders knew from their experience that the men had a better chance of surviving the horrific and brutal Middle Passage of the transatlantic voyage to the Caribbean and the Americas. The music genre evoked the history, struggles, defiance, and solidarity of the slaves, their descendants and their mixed-race Creole offsprings during that time. Madonna honors their history and tradition in this number.
