Electrolyte Repletion- 00:22
The Verdict - 01:09

Electrolytes are ions like sodium, potassium, and chloride that produce electrical charges in order to maintain the proper flow of water in and out of your cells as well as conduct nerve impulses. They are also important in maintaining something called homeostasis, or an overall balance of health. If any one of these electrolytes get too low or high, you won't be able to live. The perceived benefit of sports drinks is they replace these essential electrolytes as they are removed by your body when you sweat a lot. Is this true?

What Does The Science Say?

Based on current scientific studies available, there is little evidence that demonstrate that sports drinks keep you adequately hydrated and replenish the electrolytes that are lost during sweat any better than just plain old water. In fact, people generally get enough electrolytes they deplete while working out from *heir diet alone

Generally, if you're training is about an hour or less, water is adequate and even preferred especially if you're not profusely sweating because you don't lose that many electrolytes. However, if you're doing endurance training, or rigorous exercises as a performance athlete, you need fuel sources in order to keep your performance levels elevated, which can be in the form of glucose or any types of food etc. In this case, the sports drink acts as more of a fuel source of the glucose rather than a repletion of those electrolytes

The problem with these sports drinks is the amount of sugar within each of these as they can can sometimes be equivalent to having a can of soda. This may not be a big concern for one drink, but if you're drinking sports drinks like water throughout the day, that's a LOT of calories and sugar that can add up very quickly. Plus, they contain other ingredients like dyes and monosodium glutamate

General consensus, if you're not actively working out intensely, they're not the best option to drink regularly due to the high levels of sugar and calories.

I work my rear off at my job. Lifting stocking amd cleaning in both a meat and seafood. Drinking water plus one of theses. Really helps. I'm so tired by the end of the day that one of these really helps

If you do not like flavored water, there is body armor water. The body armor water has electrolytes. Better than normal water.

What about elderly people who don't eat as healthy a diet as they should? My mom is 80 yrs old and doesn't have much of appetite. We try to get her to eat foods that will help replenish electrolytes, but not sure if she's getting enough. Will this help her?

Body armor is my go to since I train 4 hours a day and I breast feed full time. Some auger helps with recovery. It’s mostly made up of water, coconut water, electrolytes, and vitamins. It’s the #1 recommended drink for breast feeding mamas as it increases supply. Far to many women swear it worked to say otherwise.

Then why does the nba, nfl and soccer players drink Gatorade/Powerade instead of water? 🧐

gatorade is just more sugar then bodyarmor is an I cannot handle gatorade unless it it's grape!~ I drink a 8oz BodyArmor every day at lunch at work and buy them on bulk when they are $1 each.

What are your thoughts on Ensure (low sugar) drinks?

You should've done your research on BodyArmor because they have something called BodyArmor Lyte which has no added sugar.
BodyArmor Lyte only has 2 grams of sugar coming from concentrated coconut water.

Compare these to coconut water. Or biolyte or liquid iv

You can honestly just get body armor lyte. Few calories and only 2 grams of sugar and still tastes good.

Gatorade is pretty trash ngl. I go skateboarding almost every single day, and on my way home I always stop at the gas station to grab a sports drink. Gatorade has great flavors, but they don't make me feel hydrated or like I'm recovering at all.

Bodyarmor is the opposite. Also has great flavors, but when I'm sweaty and hot and breathing heavy from all the cardio, this drink really makes my body cool down and recover to a noticeable degree. I don't buy Gatorade or powereade anymore, they suck

What about the body armor which uses sugar alcohols (Erythritol and Stevia)? Are they okay?
