Yup. I regret pretty much every internet pile-on that I've been involved in, but fortunately it was never over anything academic or professional, just stuff in popular media and I stopped when I was like 25 so I think I saved myself a lot of frustration. I mostly just come away from these things worse off than when I went into the pile-on so it's a lose/lose process. I see academics doing this a lot on Twitter/X and it's frankly a bit sad to watch because I don't want to see people whom I (should) respect behaving like middle schoolers. It doesn't build confidence in your colleagues.

I am pretty pessimistic when it comes to seeing social media as a site at which real, serious, productive conversations can be had (especially in a scholarly fashion which might be an unpopular opinion for certain people). The ugliest side of academia (or just humans) can quickly amplify on these platforms.

can you explain the context? I can't find what you are talking about.
