Head Lice

Head lice is a common infestation, which is mostly spread via direct contact with the head of an infected individual. While sharing combs may or may not lead to the spread of infection, animals and pets are NOT considered to be vectors for the transmission of lice. Common symptoms include scalp dryness, irritation, and pruritus. Diagnosis is established with the visualization of LIVE lice. The use of a fine-toothed nit comb (either wet or dry) aids in the detection of lice and is better than simple visual inspection of the hair and scalp. Nits are more easily detected than live lice, however their presence does NOT confirm active infection since nits can persist following successful treatment.

Lice can also survive for a short period on clothing or other personal items, so a shared hairbrush can help a louse find a new host. Lice cannot jump or fly from one person to another.
