Marie de Medici was the second woman from the social-climbing Italian banking family to marry into French royalty. After a decade of quarrels with her husband’s mistress, Marie was released from her miserable marriage when Henri IV was assassinated while stuck in traffic. Marie became regent for her young son, Louis XIII. But as he grew into manhood, Marie refused to share power. Mother and son engaged in an epic and bloody power struggle which resulted in the Queen mother being convicted of treason and expelled from France. She stayed with her daughter, Henrietta Maria, Queen of England and tried to get her son in Law, Charles I to ally with her other sons in law, the King of Spain and Duke of Savoy against Louis. But they refused to escalate the family drama into war. One of the most horrible mothers in history died alone and destitute in the home of an artist. Let’s explore the staggering rise and fall of Marie de Medicis, Queen of France.

I hadn’t realized there were TWO Medici Queens who ruled France as Regent. This explains my perpetual confusion regarding significant figures in ballet and opera history.

I’m so glad that was cleared up. Thank you.

The number of women in history who were put aside or degraded because HE couldn't give HIMSELF a son.... Smh 😔

Three violent rebellions??? Jeez, her son had a tremendous amount of patience for his awful mother. Totally understandable why she ended up totally isolated from all her illustrious royal children. What king or queen in their right mind would want to keep this quarrelsome woman around?

I read many times that the king Louis XIII had issues in his relationship with his wife but never read that they got forced to consummate at 13, poor teenagers, they barely reached puberty at that age, no wonder they were repulsed

Hebrietta Maria: Charles, darling, my mother is coming for a visit.

Charles I: Ugh! Why?? You know she's just going to keep begging me to go to war with France and dethrone your brother! Jeez! 🙄

Finally, Lindsay covered both the Medici queens of France. Please make a video series about the Queen Consorts of France just like the Queen Consorts of England Series ❤️🙏

Wow. "Stuck in traffic" really hits different when considering what time period we're speaking of 😂

Unreal. If she had treated her children with kindness, imagine how different her outcome would have been.

Corsets as we think of them didn’t come in till 1840s. Supportive Garments in the period were known as “bodies” with layers of fabric that helped support the bust. By the 1580s/90s boned stays were seen in records for Elizabeth I. I highly recommend Samantha Bullats channel where she made a 16th century kirtle

corsets were actually pretty confortable in that time, tight lacing didnt become a thing until the 1830's

I just realized how close you are to 1 million subs and I’m super excited for some reason

Please don't endorse the myth that corsets were uncomfortable or torture devices. When properly made and designed for the wearer, they gave excellent support, much better than modern bras. Other than that, I enjoyed the video.

So nice of Peter Paul Rubens to record every major moment in his paintings!

I love how confident you are in the ad. I would not be that confortable in my own body to do that. You look awesome. (Note: You are much more fit than I am)

The murderous Medici family is always fascinating! Medici, Borgia, sforza, they were the ultimate social climbers!
