I am a high functioning alcoholic. I recognize Bert’s confusion, because I shared the same sentiment. I often take breaks, and I’m not clawing at my skin like in the movies. So it’s easy to think I don’t have a *problem* with alcohol. But I do, and so does Bert. I love drinking too. My therapist really broke through to me when she informed me that “normal” drinking adults don’t experience that warm fuzzy feeling after 1 sip, as Bert described. Do I think people should be giving him unsolicited advice? No. It’s clearly not working. Do I think Bert should consider his relationship with alcohol? Yes. However, it is my experience that even if I say I’m not thinking about it, I am. 24/7. So does Bert. He knows, and right now he’s only hurting himself. Let him.

The whole "i love alcohol, i love alcohol, it just warms you" as he is realizing, getting the fix is the best feeling in his life. Its the same exact thing i would say when i use to do H. He absolutely is an addict and i know solely from that little clip. That was easily the most real Bert has ever been.

He’s 1, 000% an alcoholic. Doesn’t mean he can’t stop. Tons of alcoholics are sober and have the will power to be. But Bert has a romantic relationship with booze. He loves it to his core. He can’t imagine life without it. Alcohol enriches everything for him. It makes life more colorful. It’s his coping mechanism. He fantasizes about it…. Just because he can stop doesn’t mean he’s not an alcoholic.

I'm an alcoholic with 23 months sober. I don't diagnose others. But I do see A LOT of similarities between myself 24 months ago and Brent. I loved yelling I'm not an alcoholic from the rooftops (esp when I was drunk).
