Why is There an Egg Shortage (And More)

We used to do this all the time and it's such a fun format...I usually can't answer them all, but this time I feel like I got lucky.

Eggs~ I worked in Dairy (where eggs live in the grocery) for two years. If there is even one cracked egg in a dozen, the whole dozen is usually discarded, despite the fact that you can safely and legally swap out the broken egg with one from a different carton of the same brand, size, lot, and date. Many stores don't do this because it takes time and you have to keep a very simple log of what you've done, meaning that literally hundreds of eggs that are perfectly usable get discarded weekly from your average grocery. I worked very hard to avoid this when I was in Dairy and we were able to correctly reclaim eggs, and to donate mixed dozens (clearly labeled and dated) to our local food bank regularly. If you work in Dairy and want help setting that up at your store (as well as some tips on how to effectively manage the work flow to incorporate egg reclamation) let me know.

I know that's not the main reason for 50¢ each eggies, but it is a huge flaw in the system as is, and one that can be vastly addressed at the employee level, rather than requiring massive buy in from corporate and management teams.

I have pretty frequent eye twitches and asked my doctor about it, he recommended "reduce stress, sleep more" basically and when I relayed this to my partner I mixed the order up. "Reduce sleep, stress more" has become a household joke when either of us has an eye twitch.

Edit: I appreciate all the advice but I have a medical team and know that my personal eye twitch has nothing to do with vitamin deficiency or caffeine! I have neuro damage.

Last spring there were farmers on YouTube warning of the incoming egg shortage. Another HUGE issue was the price of feed due to the supply chain and expense of fuel. Made sense to me so we bought 6 chickens who began laying a few weeks ago. I may technically be below the poverty line, but these days I'm feeling pretty wealthy as I eat my omelets!

From someone who nearly bled to death due to a GI bleed, if your poop is black (or red) get it checked out. Go to the ER if there's a lot of blood or if you have other symptoms (dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea etc).

Fun fact about the black poop one: there are non-terrifying reasons for that to happen, including an abundance of iron in your diet! So if you've been taking an iron supplement, that might be the cause ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

I really admire how Hank can explain things really well, but also can recognize the limitations of his knowledge. In my experience, the smartest people are the ones who are willing to say "I don't know." I feel like it's very normalized to expect people to know everything, but it's unrealistic given the sheer amount of information that exists. No one knows everything about everything and we shouldn't expect people to know it all!

Fun (correction) fact, flags aren’t raised to half staff. They are lowered to half staff. Each day the flag is raised to the top, to honor the flag, and then, lowered to honor the person to whom it is at half staff for.

It's a good point to bring up efficiency vs. resilience because it applies to so many things. Like in computing, you usually face a similar trade-off, with things like encryption and out-of-bounds memory access checks.

I thought Black Friday had to do with the colors associated with profits and losses. Red for losing money and black when you’re positive. “Being in the black”. This day is a huge profit maker for the stores as it starts the holiday shopping season… and when they move from red to black for the year.
