It pains me to see Chomsky so old. I wish he would live 100 years more 😥

What happens if Putin violates the hypothetical ceasefire, like he did in February 2022?

Is appeasement the answer? Look at WW2?

I hope Noam is not too disappointed when Ukraine wins this war.

Yes, of course, but HOW? - a negative, tension-filled peace that allows one side to re-group and then it starts all over again?

So basically bend to the will of the powerful and renounce your rights?

What a great pleasure to be still able to see and listen to one of the greatest minds of our time.

Wonder if he would say the same thing about Palestine?

Noam assumes that Russia’s demands for a peace settlement will be made with the intention to stop or halt their geopolitical strategies beyond the Donbas and Crimea (which would be an idiotic assumption) as well as the assumption that they will not commit any type of genocide or assimilation of the Ukrainian populations the settlement will allow Russia to keep.

Just terrible. I admire a lot of what Noam Chomsky has said in the past but this take strikes me as crazy.

The first option is basically apocalypse level threat

He seems to be on the side of the second option which is more reasonable

If Chomsky had been alive in 1789 France, it would still be a kingdom. I hate war, but I hate letting dictators do what they want even more.

The only problem is that Russians don't want Ukraine to exist at all. A peace treaty will just postpone what's happening right now. Except for the new war in say 5 or 7 years Russia will make sure to prepare better and will not flop like they did this time. And the new war will be even more devastating than this one. So no, peace treaty is not an option at this point, unless Russia de occupies Ukrainian territory. Which they won't do unless they are forced to.

Dunning-Kruger dialed to 11. Old man from MIT thinks he's an expert in everything.
The fact that he missed one of several obvious alternatives of seeing a protracted stalement with limited axes of advance should tell you everything.

One of the great difficulties in negotiations is the question of how do you trust Putin.

I love how he does all his interviews now from home, comfortable in his PJ's looking like Howard Hughes.

I love this comment thread 😂😂. Noam says let’s negotiate for peace and every one is like, ‘wow, ’ ‘thank you for the clarification, ’ ‘such a great and honourable man.’

"It requires neutralisation of Ukraine" so it can be weakend and then attacked again in 5 - 10 years time to be fully annexed. All oposition to Putin would then be sent to gulags or mass graves.
[slow clap]
Maybe you should ask Ukrainins what they would like to do? Are you familiar with the concept of self-determination of nations Mr Chomsky?

I've studied linguistics and know that Chomsky is a remarkable man, but in his political views he's in a far-left dark outer space.
