What is surrealism?

What is surrealism? Who were the unsung heroes of the surrealism art movement? Many of the pioneers of surrealism art avidly collected fantasy postcards. As well as using them for general correspondence, they also drew their inspiration from the imaginative images featured on them. So, the definition of what surrealism art is would surely be incomplete if we missed out the humble postcard.

Nothing is really new. For instance, the invention of the wheel. Man (or woman) was pulling a tree trunk when it rolled over another, so making it easier. Gradually the log got shorter and shorter until...behold the wheel. BUT how many times has this happened before? with no documentation to record it.
