Surrealism is above all a philosophy of liberation. As such creating or not creating art is secondary. What matters is creating and changing life

„Surrealism is the magical surprise of finding a lion in a wardrobe, where you were 'sure' of finding shirts.“ – Frida Kahlo

Surrealism is when you stare at a field of golden wheat outside of a car window, and see it turning into the sandy dunes of a land long forgotten, or an endless sea with impossible ships wearing sails of cloud. Surrealism is the desire to explore our worlds and others, Surrealism is the embodiment of imagination. This is why so many people love the works of artists like Rob Gonsalves. The images they create are more than just paint on canvas, but a chance to return to the land of fairy tales we all end up leaving as we grow up.

For me, surrealism is closer to what may or may not be reality than any artistic expression.

I would stick to a scientific point of view. Surrealism tries to represent the unconscious, present in our dreams, mainly in the REM phase.
During the cycles of our dream, there are some 5 REM phases of different length, from 5 to 30 minutes.
What happens in the REM phase?

Physical movements are restricted to the eyelid quick movements. The rest of the neural circuits involved in motion are switched off. The mind begins to wander and see events that are not logical or deformed in time and space. This is because the neural circuits in charge of logic, space and time are switched off.

However, those circuits involved in emotions (the Limbic System) are working...That´s why dreams have such an intense emotional content.

A bit too rational, but that´s the way it is. The time we sleep is not wasted: the brain is sorting out things received during the day and consolidating them. In neuroscience there´s a saying that runs:
" Birds dream of their songs, mice dream of their mazes".
The lesson you have studied just before going to sleep is the first that you always remember clearly.

Imagine a tin can that is sealed and has no labels or markings. It looks identical to every other tin can you have seen in your life. A common tin can.
Now, what do you think is inside this can?
