CES 2018 Recap - Best Sound Bars Comparison

Can't do a discrete multi-channel speaker system? Well, there are plenty of "high-end" soundbar solutions now that cost as much as an entire theater system and try to close the gap in performance with discrete speaker systems. Marshall heard the best of the best and gave us listening impressions from the Nakamichi shootout to the new Sennheiser (yes, that's not a typo) super soundbar ($3k MSRP). But are these soundbars pricing themselves out of the market and are they growing too large to still be considered convenient and aesthically acceptable?

We also discuss how the market is changing with smart home assistant integration and how this might spell the death of bluetooth for anything other than portable audio applications.

The Nakamichi sound bar really caught my attention. This is something I definitely look into.

It’s 2, 5k euros for this soundbar and it’s the best soundbar ever! For people looking for an all-in-one solution without the headache this is truly the best option

I bought the 1500 dollar sony soundbar and took it back within a week. I picked up the nakamichi shockwafe and love it. I was wanting to switch from seperates to a more space saving streamline system and im very happy.

"5.1 Stereo" is not to be underestimated, I often find myself switching into that mode because of the pure sonic enjoyment it can provide. Different Content is the deciding factor, every movie is unique, every video game has it's own surround field engine, every song mic-ed and recorded in a different way, which is why it's soo nice to have allot of control over amplifier options and DSP. To me it's not just a gimmick, and Having really gotten to know a mid level Yamaha receiver for several years, I have come to truly appreciate the breadth of features and DSP they provided me. My most notable insights having retired the receiver, are that menu's and the ease of toggling options and modes is truly meaningful, but only if you have the time to get to know a receiver, which is why updates really need to be delivered and not just promised. If product refresh cycles are too frequent the user experience can suffer, what the brands need to do is create a solid menu system to cary their customers from product to product with the same execution and familiarity. Because at the end of the day they all have dolby whatever, but it's the interface that really sets them apart and defines the brand. and bring back Quadraphonics baby!

The whole idea of the Soundbar is not to have all the wires and speakers and clutter around your room . If you have partner or kids then the Soundbar has it role to play. Unless you have a dedicated room but most people don't.

3K for a sound bar If a soundbar comes with 2 subs and surround speakers, is it still a sound bar? or an all-in-one surround system..

There is not a single valid reason why flat panel manufacturers can't simply have a speaker system below the screen instead of on the back. They stopped doing it when they discovered they could start scamming customers into buying an additional piece of hardware by deliberately making the sound suck. Now that has evolved into a completely new industry.

Since you can get a pretty good 2.1 sound system for around 300 bucks I would not want to spend much more than that on a sound bar. That is just my personal preference, For mini it is really more about the use case then the cost. There are those who do not want to put speakers around the room and just want a simple, sleek system that is easy to use. In these cases a sound bar with in their budget is the only place concern.

I have a full atmos system but also use a Klipsch Soundbase for when I don't want full system, such as watching the news or a talk show ect. The Klipsch was About $300 and that had a decent amount of base and volume.

It’s pretty easy to raise a TV a few inches with painted or stained quality plywood. My Samsung Q8F has approximately 5” clearance and I have a neighbor that is a skilled woodworking hobbyist! $3000.00 is a convenience factor and I agree unless you are using with a very high-end tv it would be hard to justify.

Fo me $200, if it comes with a sub, which is a must, $250. Anything past $300 needs to be an investment in upgrade potential, with features for additional wireless surrounds and subs.

I bought the Yamaha ysp 2500 soundbar of eBay for £320 in the UK. Room size 14 x15 ft.Set it up accurately then adjust the volume levels. Feed it 1080p Blueray disc and Wow. 50% volume is enough for sound response. It's powerful, dynamic and exciting . It's only good if you put something with dts hd support. Very impressive. I come from a 7.1 Kef system looking back it wasn't as good as the Yamaha. Technology moves on. .I don't miss it. I wouldn't mind Dolbyatmos and dtsx.audio. Sony has a new one out this year.
