Note that there are two types of “Netflix Original” content: 1. Productions that Netflix is involved with from the beginning which are expected to follow the guidelines laid out by Netflix. 2. Productions that Netflix gets an exclusive license for where the production isn’t expected to follow every guideline because it was acquired after production or after completion.
I worked on a Netflix Original that was licensed after the project was completed. Most of the movie was filmed on Alexa cameras (a camera not on the list).
You mentioned a few requirements of cameras on the list. Another thing they have in common is that they have a timecode connection on the camera (at least last time I checked).
Thanks for sharing such great content on your channel!

I sold my feature doc to Netflix and they played it for 1.5 years. It was shot on a Canon C100mk1. They never even asked.

We were just talking about how ridiculous it is the Alexa Mini not being approved is. It's not even just Netflix, ALL broadcasters have a min spec camera they'll accept as part of their original content. From behind the scenes when working in development to get a show sold to Netflix...(which is not easy by the way). Producers will shoot their development content on an approved Netflix camera simply to improve their chances. Most of this is because of how the service spits out the end video after compression etc and they want to make sure the "look" doesn't waver too much. Still not a lot of people who are streaming netflix in full 4k either.

I just did some work on a development series being pitched to Netflix and they intentionally shot it on approved camera specs, even though nobody outside of the top brass at Netflix will see it. This is why camera rental houses exist ;)

Great video, people online tend to forget that most movies outside of Netflix aren't shot on 4k cameras at all (most of 'em being 2.5K) because outside of Netflix, the bigger and more diverse film industry around the world favors more the quality of the sensor rather than just the resolution itself.

Was just thinking about this the other day. They pick up movies in the festivals that don’t adhere to the list even.

Glad someone said it - great video 🤙🏻

you just gave me a breath of fresh air, I just bought 2 Black Magic Pocket 6k Pro for a documentary and of course we all want to sell our content to Netflix or some platform to be exposed, but I really was disappointed with my purchase because everybody said that Netflix didn't approve my cameras and you start to feel like really frustrated. Thanks a lot Armando!! Great content!!

I had to subscribe expeditiously, you are the only person to answer this question I've had for so long as efficiently as you did! Thank you!

You're a freaking KING!! I did not know this.I was confused. So many of the doc's look low budget but the rules are so vague on the approved list.

I wasn’t aware this was a thing before today. That’s insane that people are demanding that Netflix approved cameras are the only route to go.

Steven Soderbergh's High Flying Bird. Shot entirely with iPhone 8 + Filmic Pro app. It's on Netflix. Just saying.

So, what is important to look for in a video camera?
- Usability / workflow
- Ergonomics
- Image quality
- Color space, depending on your level of desire and skill for color grading
- Sensor size / interchangeable lenses, depending on what you are shooting
- Log profile (and not all of those are created equal)
- Audio, including XLR inputs and preamp quality (sure, you can use an external recorder for that, but it adds time and complexity)
- Neutral density filters (which goes back to usability)
- Good autofocus is very handy, but most pro video is shot with manual focus, so it's not required
- Viewfinder / screen quality
- Assist tools for framing and exposure (peaking, punch in, zebras, waveforms, vectorscopes)
- Enough money left over for good lenses and lighting

4K has become a near necessity today, but that doesn't mean just because the camera is only HD, it's bad. It's probably just older.

Absolutely fantastic video as always Armando!! Thank you so much for this industry insight! This misconception that by it being Netflix approved, it made a camera "superior" when really it's just a set of specs Netflix openly shares regarding what's approved for their Originals.

Btw, was wandering if you are considering doing a video on the Panasonic S1H? I'd love to hear your thoughts on using it and Panasonic's approach.
