Calcutta Air Raid by Japanese - December 5, 1943

On December 5, 1943, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service (IJAAS) carried out the most disastrous attack on the city of Calcutta at the #Kidderpore/Khidirpur dockyard killing around 335 – 500 people. Maximum of the victims of this raid were coolies and laborers sleeping in their quarters. Unlike previous night raids (starting from 1942), this was daytime raid something which the allied forces had not anticipated and the squadrons meant for defending the city had just returned to #Calcutta from Chittagong and were just not ready to retaliate.

Thank you so much for uploading this. My grandma told us stories about this. She said that she was 5 or maybe 6 when the bombinbs took place. She told us how her mother used to hide them under the ground in small underground houses that they made and used to put cotton balls in their ears because of the sound of the bombings. My grandma died in 2014 and we live here in khidderpore

My grandma from West Bengal was about 8 or 9 when the Japanese started bombing India, she told me stories about precisely this and more
