Is it real love or an addictive relationship?

When I was in addictive relationships, I knew somewhere in my mind that this person wasn’t good for me. That they weren’t treating me the way I wanted to be treated. But I still stayed with them. It was almost like I couldn’t help myself. I felt compelled to keep talking to or seeing this person, even though, the relationship was also causing me a lot of pain. If you had asked me what I liked about these men, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you much other than I loved them. These were addictive relationships, meaning, relationships that were harmful to me but I couldn’t break away. Until one day I did. If you’ve been in this dynamic, I’m sure you know the feeling of being pulled into something that hurts you. So what does healthy love look like that’s not addiction? It’s acceptance. It’s not sparks, it’s not chemistry, it’s not attraction, although that can be a part of a romantic relationship, that’s not what healthy love is in and of itself. Real love is peaceful. It feels safe. It doesn’t give you butterflies or anxiety. A healthy relationship feels like a choice everyday. There’s no unconscious pull. You choose to be there because you feel loved, appreciated and respected. You’re not there out of some unconscious dynamic. Can you relate to this? Let me know in the comments.
