Baseball catchers should be backing up first base in certain situations. Here is a clear guide on when and how they should and should not backup first base.

We always bring right field to back up first for 2 reasons. He's usually faster and we don't want to overheat out catcher

Getting to get the younger kids to hustle to backup plays is a challenge. I emphasize that on every play that each player should be moving. (Where they’re moving is another challenge 😬)

Well, when you outpace the runner to the base it makes people watch.

As an old catcher (55+) who still plays, I appreciate this video and will do better at backing up 1st base.

Left side? Leave it. Right side? RUN! [When the lead runner doesn't matter]

I play right field shallow then have them back up unless on a double play

Horrible effort by the field umpire in the first clip.

You should do a video on app based score keeping devices. Which ones you like best. Also, how coaches should take advantage of this technology at the youth level.

The last two clips was the right fielders back up cause angle of throw...but yes Catcher should least got halfway case it was a missed pick deflected back to dugout!

If you're Yadi...ALWAYS, unless there is a runner on second or third.

You do not see it much in youth travel ball, but the nice thing is when you do, it is a beautiful thing. Always makes me think I would want that kid on a team. Also shows how athletic the catcher is.

So many of the fields we play on have barely any foul territory down the lines. Maybe 8 feet from the base to the fence. Does that affect how you coach this? Certainly can't take that wide angle, and it almost feels like it's better for RF to have that responsibility with the younger 10u and below) crowd.

the umpiring in this video is lacking.

@MJH - as this video is not about the umpires at all, I will bite my tongue 'til it bleeds... but I would like to know if you recall what PU and U1 are signaling as BR rounds 1B on the play starting at 1:58. I see nothing at all to signal, but they both seem excited about something; PU is pointing and U1 has his left arm out to the side as if signaling obstruction in a softball game (softball guy? I don't know any baseball guys who signal obstruction that way, though I've heard it may have been taught as an NFHS baseball mechanic at some point in the past, before my time)
