Do You Need Fat Tires on an EBike? The Truth About Fat Tire Electric Bikes

Fat tire ebikes are generally electric bikes with tires wider than 3". The big wide tires can provide better traction, shock absorption and also can tackle off road terrain. But does everyone need fat tires on their electric bicycle? The answer is no, while fat tires do provides benefits, there are also negatives to having 3" wide or greater tires on your electric bike. The biggest downside is they will drain your e bike battery faster than a thinner tire. Keeping battery juice is one of the most important things on an ebike ride. With that said, if you plan to only do short rides or are very certain the fat tire ebike you like can last the distance you plan to ride, then go for it. I think it's important to understand though that a fat tire e bicycle has some positives and some negatives.

I use my evryjourney e-bike to commute to work every day. I’m going on 60 and have a physical job. I ride my evryjourney as a regular bike to work, and then use peddle assist on my way home after I’m physically beat after my shift. It’s the perfect balance for what I need.

It's also important to add your body weight that adds to the drain.

Where I live there is gravel and sand, lots of potholes, so I like my 20x4". In winter there is snow and ice which I do ride. I also really like the fat tires for cornering, can really dive deep. And of course, climbing without slip on the fat tire is great.

I just got my first ebike and the best deal I could find was a 3" tire. I'd prefer a regular mountain bike tire. It is pretty heavy though. Is the fat, lower pressure type going to hold up to weight better?

You might as well go with the fattest tire possible since the motor is doing all the work.
