A casket failure at a cemetery

I was walking through a cemetery in Las Vegas and I noticed blood and embalming fluid flowing out of a crypt this is what people call in the industry a casket failure. Which means that as a body bloats and gases escape the casket is supposed to not be totally airtight allowing for natural decomposition of the body but when it doesn't allow the gases to escape what happens a lot of times is the body will in a sense explode and that is what is referred to as a casket failure

As a Class 1 Funeral Director and Embalmer for 8+ years, this is actually a common occurrence with the Above Ground Crypts/Vaults, it’s important to remember that even when Remains are preserved with embalming, this only slows down the process but dosnt stop it completely, the issue with above Ground burials is that these vaults use a Vent and Draining System that’s installed within the the back of the vaults. Once they drains get clogged or fail then it causes a backup and pressure builds up. Less common for those buried in a Steel Gasket Seals Casket but those buried within a Oak or pine Casket, the body starts to decay over time and the pressure of gas builds up and when pressure is too much that it’s enough pressure to pop the lid of the casket open and can even cause the seals on the vault to come loose and that’s when embalming fluid and tissue restoration fluid start to make its way out, also environmental factors come into play and most of the time, it would require to re open the crypt and reseal it and clear the drain, or in a more extreme case the family would rebury their loved one in a different casket. Always a risk with the above ground burials

If anybody was curious, this can occur if the weather is warm, the body begins to cook, and the gasses have nowhere to escape so the casket explodes. The fluid then leaks out. It’s gross, but so are dead bodies in general.

Oh wow, call them and let them know it's a nightmare and would be heartbreaking for family to see.

“I’d hate for a loved one to see this, “ continues to post this online for everybody to see.

Hi! I’m a mortician in training! What that is purge, it happens when the seal is too tight and there is no venting, or flow to allow the body to decompose correctly!

Not blood. Liquified remains. Doesn't even look like blood. My question is... How did nobody notice the smell? I've smelled that smell. It's a pretty obvious one.

This is one of the reason why when people died, they wanted to be cremated.
