Neurodiverse families are very very confusing and of course there were a lot of things going on and none of us knew about the autism in my family. We just knew that it was confusing and chaotic and people were talking over the top of each other and using power dynamics and not engaging with each other in a respectful loving, warm, way. But we didn't know why. And, therefore, since I was really good at caretaking and seeing other people's perspectives, that just became what I did. It made me feel good because as a neurotypical, my brain works in a way that when I help other people feel comfort, I feel comforted with them. So I'm actually incentivized to comfort people. But comforting people who are hurting you is a really different thing than comforting people who are not hurting you.
