During the college football game between Virginia and Georgia Tech, Virginia ahd a funny blooper late in the first half when their return man forgot to call for a fair catch on the kickoff and kneeled down. As a result, Virginia started with the ball at the 3 yard line instead of the 25.

I was expecting him to get drilled lol

The only thing that saves that bonehead play was the fact that there was only 23 seconds left before half.

For those confused, he should have called for a fair catch because then Virginia would have gotten the ball at the 25. Instead, they started with the ball at the 3. Of course it didn’t really matter with so little time left in the half, but it was a funny play haha.

Edit: Btw in college football on kickoffs you can call for a fair catch anywhere inside the 25 yard line and still get the ball at the 25. As some others have mentioned, the purpose of the rule is to limit the amount of kick returns since they often lead to injuries.

As a Virginia fan we are on a 5-6 year cycle. We get a new coach, he starts 2-10 or 3-9, by his 5th or 6th year he is 6-6 and then he gets fired or resigns. Really fun to watch

Virginia just had a good PSC highlight then they ruined it with this one, classic UVA😂

Number 2 was literally signaling for him to take a fair catch before he took the knee. Like damn it dude he does this all the time in practice!

It happens. I saw a guy in high school catch a kickoff at the 5 yard line, back it up into the end zone and take a knee thinking it would be a touchback.

Well at least his teammates especially # 2 knows the fair catch rule. LOL!

Next one is gonna be Georgia Tech quarterback running out of bounds with no time left on the clock.

At some point you should make a compilation of UVA’s “best” drops, I swear they drop an absurd number of passes every game. The receivers get wide open and then just straight up forget how to catch, and I feel like it would be top tier content lol

I zoomed in on this and took a closer knee NEVER actually touched the ground. You can see via the shadow (or lack thereof) underneath his leg. That ball was still technically live until the moment he finally stepped out of bounds on the sideline.

I was at this game and was so confused by this. Also our QB (Georgia Tech) at the last play of the game instead of throwing it with zero seconds on the clock decided to just run out of bounds for no reason. Such a disaster of a game you should post that clip if you find it too.

When I watched this for the first time I thought he was trying to fake the knee and let everyone run past him then take off.

OK, I may be tired but.. isn't the problem that he caught the ball at all? What does a fair catch do there?
