The Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee and Monona Terrace convention center in Madison filled with election workers and observers Friday as the presidential election recount got underway.

Milwaukee and Dane counties, the state's two largest and most liberal, were the only ones in which the campaign of President Donald Trump requested a retallying of the ballots after he lost the state to Democratic challenger Joe Biden by a slim margin in the Nov. 3 election.

His campaign paid $3 million to the state this week to launch the partial recount. The effort, which is unlikely to overcome Biden's more than 20,600-vote lead, is seen by legal observers as preparation for a lawsuit.

Even if the results were overturned in Wisconsin, Trump would need a similar change in fortune in other states in order to win the election. In other states, ballot-counting efforts have drawn legal battles and scores of protesters.
